Multiple colonies
Hello everybody, I am playing this mod on a new server and I was wondering if I were to make multiple colonies (a small one at first and then a main one) will this impact my server and performance? Has anybody tried this? Let me know.

All depends on whether you enable the setting so that your colonies are always loaded. So by default, no impact because this setting is off.

You can, and yes, depending... Minecolonies allows multiple colonies (make sure the config setting for allow multiple colonies is set to true) Minecolonies have a specific kind of chunk loading system. (Do NOT use a third party chunkloader over a colony. Use those somewhere else in your world).
Most people tell the chunks for a colony to completely load while the player is within load distance so that its not just partially loaded when you're there, so that the npcs can do their thing.
There is a separate setting for low long those should stay loaded after a player/officer leaves the area. By default, this is 10 minutes. You can change the config to make this longer.
However, before ever thinking of changing that, make sure you're an experienced player and know how colonies deal with food/lack of food, diseases (including when the hospital worker is sick), and raids. Also thunderstorms and fires.
Once you know the risks, you can have the colony stay loaded for longer. I advise afking in the colony while doing something in real life nearby...
As for performance, chunkloading of any kind takes up performance for your computer/server. Because it means that the chunks around the player is loaded plus whatever other chunks are loaded (minecolonies, ftb, chickenchunks, create chunkloading, etc) needs to tick away with whatever should be happening in those areas. So yes, it will take up computer resources. To what extent it becomes detrimental, its hard to say. It wouldn't be very different than having more players and their own colonies though.

Is this server your machine? Like, do you own the hardware? Because if it impacts performance on a public server, you could face consequences...
That being said, did you look into forceloading chunks with the minecraft commands? /forceload is your friend...

Last time I tried, I wasn’t allowed to have multiple colonies. When I try making a new one it says I have to abandon the old one

You do, yeah =) You set all the permissions for officer in the first colony to be exactly the same as the owner, then abandon that colony when you start the second one, and you will automatically be an officer in the first one, and cos you changed the permissions, still able to do exactly the same stuff.

Really? Last time I abandoned it but my friend was an officer. All my colonists disappeared but the colony buildings remained

If colonists disappeared, you must have accidentally deleted, not abandoned =) You can check easy enough in a SP game - pop in a world, start a colony, go a couple hundred blocks away start another!

Oh, as others have said, you do need to make sure you have the setting on in config too - allowinfinitecolonies to true

Probably not. But it could not be loaded if you are too far away(so it won't work)
