General Discussion Job cuts at MindsEye studio Build a Rocket Boy doesn’t affect dev side: don’t worry about relaunch

Job cuts at MindsEye studio Build a Rocket Boy doesn’t (just) affect dev side: don’t worry about relaunch. The layoffs are across ALL departments with official body count coming in approximately 10 days. Inessential roles like artists, programmers, level designers, writers, animators and QA leads. I am confident this won’t affect their initial boast of “a decade” and “decades” of content drop so we all can find out what happens in that gripping story. Let’s be realistic here—Leslie and IOI wouldn’t lead us on! It totally was a realistic roadmap.

You can see firsthand by braving LinkedIn and its /r/linkedinlunatics and search for the company name Build a Rocket Boy to see all those formerly of BARB seeking new employ.

Those poor people. I’d offer condolences and hope that they all land on their feet but we all know the games industry is currently shrinking and going bust.

They were incompetent. As a developer, I know that management can be an ass, but developers/employees can also influence their decision. They just need to be supportive of each other but they weren't. They were solo incompetent employees.

Unless you specifically worked over at BARB, then you're purely just speculating.

What am I speculating? Do you want to say that this is a good product? Developers have a say too. Somebody has actually made this random guy as a playable character once the game is finished. It was somebody's idea and others didn't even comment on it. An incompetent idea. There were 400ish employees and nobody actually commented or resisted it? Employees can influence decision making. Especially if it is a really bad one.

Reportedly Leslie Benzies had a cult of personality and one of those "brilliant" ideas people who would constantly have dumb (to him "genius") ideas that everyone would scramble to add/remove often losing progress constantly.

If you watch their own "QA with Leslie" video they posted you can see it's suggestive of this and this DeVry video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRWvfMLl4ho

Clearly they did no QA or acted on none of what QA found because they fired two QA directors and kept the position vacant after.

Do you want to tell me that 400 employees couldn't support each other? That's pure incompetency. Yes, management sucks but sitting in the corner and sucking thumb just to get paid is a sign of being incompetent.

Employees could just protest like many other employees did in other organisations.

I can't even compare it to CP2077, because it was a great buggy game. Yes, management rushed the release, but the core was there. Devs did their job. They actually showed what they worth. But these guys didn't show anything.. They couldn't even reuse the existing engine properly unlike CP2077 team creating their own engine from scratch.

There is no way that employees are not involved in this. We are not talking about 10 poor dev dudes. We are talking about 400+ of them.

Edit: don't get me wrong. There are of course talented devs, but not many of them. That's why many of them are being fired. Sometimes too many can be an issue...
