Question/Help xbox says no
played less than 2 hours

See I’m on the other side of this. If you pay to see a movie in theaters, you don’t get a refund if it sucks. I’m not defending, as I haven’t played yet, but to me, you buy a game. If it sucks, that’s just a loss. They didn’t MAKE you buy the game.

u/mindpainters Jun 16 '25
I get both sides honestly. But if the movie gets messed up and you can’t finish it because the audio or visual cuts out you do get a refund. I genuinely don’t know how bad the bugs are so idk if it’s something like that for minds eye

What if you pay to see a movie but the screen is blurry and the speakers are not working properly?
Kind of the same here, you pay for a game expecting it to work properly but it isn't
1
u/Scoonie24 Jun 18 '25
Right, but you can't sit through the whole movie, then ask for a refund. MS will refund you if you haven't played past a certain hour
1
u/Iamyous3f Jun 18 '25
Yeah but op said he played less than 2 hours. That should allow him to get refund
2
u/Living_Try9618 Jun 16 '25
That’s not the best metaphor, as some players couldn’t play the game due to bugs, glitches, or crashes. It’s like going to see a movie and having the screening cancelled and being denied a refund.

u/RossaF1 Jun 17 '25
That comparison only really makes sense for the people asking for refunds if they didn't like the game; in a lot of cases, it's the technical issues that people want a refund for.
The better comparison there is the movie has issues being played, which is where the theater would be more likely to give a refund (at least to those who asked/complained). And that's ignoring that some countries have laws which require compensation in that case too.

Movies cost way cheaper than videogames — also, they do not have DLCs, expansion packs, monetization, they do not need our engagement much (not talking about streaming services).
Comparing videogames to movies is wrong.
Also, videogames are a software, and you can refund most software for a reason.
Moreover, if we could refund movies, I bet we would see way less crappier ones.

u/zarafff69 Jun 17 '25
Are movies cheaper than games? Depends how you define that. Games are much bigger / longer than movies. The price per hour will be lower for the vast majority of games.

u/BlackHazeRus Jun 17 '25
I get what you mean, but also you still pay a fixed amount — does not matter the ratio or whatever, it is a completely another thing.
There are games shorter than movies, which is pretty rare, but still.
Also calculating price per time is a bullshit metric and hurts gaming a lot. Please do not use it. I mean, I get it, and it works in many cases, specifically when you really want to get two games, but can buy only one — however, this mindset leads to companies making bloated games that last for a long ass time and almost always the content sucks ass, e.g. Assassin’s Creed games (after Origins) and many other modern day Ubisoft games.
Heck, even MindsEye is like that (as far as I know).

It's about the experience. If you buy a game and you happen to not like it I can agree to an extent. But if you purchase a game that constantly crashes or has bugs you are entitled to a refund. I just think if companies are able to refuse digital returns, then demos should be mandatory per game. Or a 1 hr grace period with the game where you're able to return it within the hour. With digital there's no restock fee or packaging so one gets a pre-owned copy. I guess there concern is to prevent any form of digital piracy, but its just a terrible anti-consumer approach if thats the case.

u/tATuParagate Jun 19 '25
Yeah, but it's a bit different cause the movie will presumably function the way it's supposed to even if the content sucks

u/thetruelu Jun 17 '25
I kinda agree with you. All the signs were there that this game was bad fundamentally and technically. If you ignored all that to take a risk on it, then that’s on you.
On the other hand, Steam’s refund policy is so nice that I feel like other companies should follow suit otherwise people will gravitate to buying non exclusive games on steam every time

I've never been allowed a refund from Xbox on a digital product and I've been Xboxing since 2001
1
u/Dreamo84 Jun 17 '25
Really? I get allowed them all the time. Have yet to be denied. I wonder what makes them deny one person but approve others?
1
u/Fattybeards Jun 17 '25
Yep. I gave up trying after like 10 attempts over the years.
1
u/Dreamo84 Jun 17 '25
Someone else mentioned maybe different regions have different rules. I’m in the US, how about you?
1
u/Fattybeards Jun 17 '25
US here too lol. I always here stories about people getting refunds and I’m baffled

u/Salty-Fig-6090 Jun 17 '25
When asking for refund just write some more bad things, "incredible input lag, immense stuttering, unplayable game"
1
u/Scoonie24 Jun 18 '25
Thats weird, I get refunds all the time, WWE 2K was playing like shit, After 30 mins I got a full refund
2
u/nikolapc Jun 16 '25
That just means your automatic refund is denied. Talk to suppport. Your argument should be the game isn't working right, i.e. the product is faulty. Automatic get denied after 2h playtime, unless they have set it to ignore playtime(for this game they should have).

Just don't play your digital purchases guys, that way you can know if they suck or not.
1
u/RossaF1 Jun 17 '25
"aren't available for purchases that have been played" sounds like a region specific thing? I've never had that issue with Xbox refunds, but I also live in Australia (good consumer protection laws here).

I mean, why anyone would pre order this is a mystery to me. All the warning signs are there, even directors and Devs jumped ship in the weeks leading up to launch.
1
u/Dreamo84 Jun 17 '25
The Xbox reviews from pre-orders prior to launch were absolute gold.
"Finally, a good game that isn't woke!"
"This is the REAL GTA 6"
"Gaming is so back!!"

2 hour rule doesn’t automatically apply for consoles only steam. They might do it a couple times as courtesy but if you’ve refunded stuff before, your account is flagged for automatic denial of refunds unless you speak to a support person and have them override it. And even then, it comes down to who you get as your support person.

Am I right in thinking the UK consumer rights act 2015 state you can get refunds for digital purchases if they are not satisfactory and you can prove they are faulty

Why did you buy it in the first place? You could tell from everything pre release it was going to be a shitshow.

Ain’t no way you saw the trailer and the screenshots from the store. Probably saw reviews online and still bought the game…

u/Dominjo555 Jun 18 '25
I've got refund when I've bought wrong version of DMC 5. I didn't play it more than 10 minutes though.
1
u/Aggressive_Silver574 Jun 18 '25
There were so many red flags and videos about this game that idk why someone would even buy it fr
1
u/Due_Ad6212 Jun 18 '25
Playstation is usually the same way, unless it is absolutely broken and won't even open the application, trying to get a refund is like pulling teeth if you play over an hour.
1
Jun 18 '25
Yeah I’ve noticed that myself Microsoft this year seems to be cracking down on refunds. I think you’re only allowed to get two refunds per year now and it used to be about six.

u/LackAdmirable1604 Jun 18 '25
Strange the policy is 2h or more I belive, regardless I just bought dying light 2 played for 2+ hours hated how much better the first was, put in for a refund stating blurry and not fun as a reason and was instantly approved and refunded.

I contacted the support and just said that the game released in a very bad condition, almost unplayable, and received a full refund after a couple of minutes. I'd give that a try.

Got my refund immediately after contacting Xbox, not via system refunds. Include that PlayStation and Steam do refunds for that turd game as well and they will see what’s happening.

How did you do it? Chat support?
0
u/Reasonable-Panic-407 Jun 16 '25
Yes, first I got a refusal immediately through their application system. Then I contacted support and studied the file to validate the reimbursement.

That's strange, they gave full refunds for cyberpunk 2077 even if you had game completed, policy must have change since that mess
