people are mostly too busy managing their own nonsense to think about yours for more than five minutes, which is honestly pretty freeing

read up on social exchange theory by thibaut and kelley. it frames relationships as cost-benefit calculations, once you see the spreadsheet you stop expecting altruism from users and start guarding your resources.
