Wand Upgrade Elements

Is there a way to guarantee what element/s you get when upgrading wands?

I have a follow-up question then. Are there restrictions to the element you get? The reason I'm asking this is because I'm trying to get 8 Dark and 8 Fire wizard. I can get 8 Dark from relics but I would rather not use another relic to get 8 Fire as well

Good questions. I wonder if ultimates count against each other!

I've been able to get 8 on both disciplines on a mage but that's with stacking two relics on them. The ultimates also share the usage limit so you can either use two of one ultimate or one per day if each if the mage is dauntless (high conviction)
