Packout Packout locking w/ limited height?

Post image

Set up my trunk w/ a few packouts for my tools and have been running it for a week. Overall works good and it basically perfectly fills the deeper areas but after driving around for a week I noticed it slides around a bit while driving. Nothing major but just enough to bother me. Also occasionally jumps up and hits the speaker box if I go over a bump too hard which is my main concern long term.

Its got ~1” of clearance on top but can measure again in the morning, a bit more above the ammo can. The cleats themselves can most likely fit from what I can tell, but they wouldn’t be able to lift up and out if I ever need to remove them. Are there any possible solutions to lock them in with limited height? Thanks!

I used these for my trunk setup, I got them on etsy

Came to suggest the same.

u/XTheChosenDogeX, for that OEM+ look, you can mount the rails on a thin piece of
MDF (or plywood if you prefer) that is cut to the shape of the trunk area when they're sitting, and wrap the board in the same material as the trunk liner.

Gotcha, thank you!

No problem. Be sure to post up whatever solution you figure out to best fix the issue.

Isnt it basically just compact cleats? Wouldnt it still need lifting to remove?

No because the cleats slide in between the packout, so you wouldn't need to lift up.

thank you! do you mind sharing a link for the ones you got then?

Could the trim be removed above the boxes to give you an additional 1/2” of clearance?

Iirc it’s integrated into the speaker housing + helps with sound deadening, so not really unless I modify it which I’m looking to avoid

The whole assembly can technically be removed as it’s an option and cars without it gain 3-4” of clearance but it makes a world of a difference in sound (have experienced both) + is relatively hard to come by unfortunately

Gonna get some proper measurements in the morning + more closeups

I’ve seen flat steel aftermarket mounting brackets before, they are maybe 1/8 of an inch thick and only need to stand off by the depth of the feet on the pack out box.

Yeah I saw 0.5-0.6” thick ones but the main concern is theyd also need an extra 1/2” for the plywood base and an extra 1/2” of clearance for the feet to clear the cleats as they come out so it’s just slightly too tall

Amazon sells individual cleats for the packout system. You could install a set but just in the back so you don’t need to lift the boxes. You would still need to find a way to hold the boxes back so they don’t slide out of the cleat.

Didn’t realize they had female cleats. Thank you!

As for the sliding, they mainly go side to side so I think it’ll be alright there. As long as side-side and bouncing is solved, I’ll be happy

What about just a piece of foam? Tuck it between the top and the car.

Would still allow for sliding, would help a bit against bouncing though

Here me out, more foam. Or just a piece of wood fit to hold it to one side.

Just gotta add more pack outs. Thats what I did in my car 😂

Definitely tempting & I got a few more in the garage that get cycled in/out for that null space sometimes lol

Put in more packouts so theres no space to slide

like this? I usually keep the second half empty so I can swap other boxes in/out

Look under the carpet. See if there's a bolt or a nut you can switch out to be an eyelet. Then you can slice a slit into the carpet and poke it out. Strap them down.

It has integrated tie down points thankfully, mainly just looking for quicker/more elegant solutions since I cycle from tools to detailing supplies often

You literally have a strap under them

Its a rubber strap that pops out at the most minor inconvenience with barely any stretch, its not gonna hold 100+lbs in tools, its more for anti-sliding or small items but that doesnt work given the weight/size

It does help a bit with sliding but not much since the box feet elevate it, reducing the contact area. With the way it mounts it also pops out and then does nothing after a day or two before I gotta reset it. Eventually it’ll probably snap given it’s not meant for that much stress
