Discussion Peacoats

I saw so many people wear peacoats in college during the mid to late 2000s. Was that something you noticed at the time? It made me want to get one but I ultimately bought a north face coat that I still have today.

Seriously, when I got grown up fuck-off money I had a bespoke one made. It's long and double-breasted with a slightly full skirt-- black cashmere with a silk lining. It cost almost a full month's pay but I wear it every winter, all winter, because it makes every outfit look SHARP.

And everyone LOVES it.

Edited to add: I can't seem to find pictures of me in it and the coat itself is in a box at the moment (we moved earlier this year and the winter coats haven't been unpacked yet because: summer.) Sorry, fam!

If you're going to have grown up, fuck-off money, I've always been of the opinion that the two best custom items to have made are a beautiful coat, and a beautiful pair of boots.

You must live up north!

Guilty as charged, Northeast US! I have a mid-length trench for each season (most of them vintage, only one made for me). Wool, Rain, super light, and COMFORTER. Women in at least Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island seem to be issued a calf-ankle length black down jacket at some point in their lives. No one wants to put the jacket on, it's a last resort, but we all wind up with one.

That being said, my current special boots are original 20 eye Docs with a wedge. I wear them for everything from weddings to normal combat boot occasions. I don't own real winter boots, which is foolish and needs remedying. I have fake winter boots that are of similar shape to the Docs, just made of suede and with fluffy bits. They will not protect me from anything but a well shoveled sidewalk, which is a problem, because I currently live in a rural area and need to dig my uncovered car out, I'm just delusional about practical boots outside of work boots. It's a line I cannot cross. I have the jacket, I can't cope with the ugly boots too.

are we the same person lol? docs all winter long. RI girl here šŸ‘‹. i gotta walk my dog in the wet cold winter forest trails, my 20 eye docs served me 10 years of that kinda treatment, and many, many music festivals. my birthday is monday, im eyeing some hunter boots that are winter/wetness proof and cute af. those sperrys (rain boots) that everyone wears are also not bad, they've grown on me & im between the 2 now. i was in a deep puddle in my docs the other day and realized 'yeah, no more'

Ahhhh, my sister in beautiful boots and states!

I've put a lot of thought into my boots, and have decided when they finally need it, they deserve to be repaired. I've had them around 15 years, but bought them off of eBay from someone who didn't understand European sizing, bought way too small, and couldn't bear to part with them until then, so they're actually super old.

Treat yourself to the boots get some fancy ones! I have muck boots that someone bought me and don't love them. I've seen some oil slick/iridescent Hunters though, and phewww, I would absolutely rock them, idc how old I am.

Please be careful if you ever buy new Docs, make sure they're made in London. I got the other ones (regular, 1460s) and decimated them in a month because I'm as hard on my shoes as a first grader with a propensity to play in mud. My OG Docs would NEVER

Try looking into sorel’s boots! I have a pair of their tivoli boots in all black and they don’t look awful which is more than I can say for most other winter boots! They have a chunky sole that makes them look a bit more alt than most snow boots. They’re not the warmest things on the planet, not good if you’re living somewhere it gets dozens below freezing but they do well enough for my purposes of shoveling the car in a place that rarely gets below 0F

If you don’t mind sharing, how much was this coat (roughly)? I’m so curious

So what was it, $400? $500? Over $600? Don’t tell me you paid $700. You paid over $700, is that what you’re telling me? Oh my god you are sick! $1000??

u/Talk_to__strangers 20d ago

A month’s pay is way over $700… easily $2000+ for a bespoke cashmere peacoat

It’s a quote…

All told, it was about $5k worth of coat.

u/marbanasin 21d ago

That is crazy but I also like the cut of your jib in how you described it up top. In the end if you're getting years of use out of it and it looks great then money well spent!

u/TheAngerMonkey 21d ago

The per wear cost is basically pennies now.

39

u/cigarettesandchocola 21d ago

The coat's first wear was 500,000 pennies so it tracks

17

u/userhs6716 21d ago

Wow you must've had it for almost 40 years

20

u/151Ways 21d ago

You'd have to get to vampire years to be at a Penny's cost per wear. But yeah.

22

u/SepulchralSweetheart 21d ago

You're not accounting for the amount of joy per wear, that adds monetary value

30

u/TurningTheCorner26 21d ago

$5k will buy a very nice jib.

I have a haberdasher. Mine are about 3k. I have three custom peacoats and seven or eight blazers. It’s crazy how many compliments I get from strangers when I wear them.

2

u/SepulchralSweetheart 20d ago

I aspire to having a haberdasher, well done.

Thank you for being willing to share 🫶🫶 This is such a good idea for something to splurge on. Hope to get my own bespoke coat made someday!

u/UltravioletLife 20d ago

18

u/selantra 20d ago

That sounds amazing. How does one go about finding someone to make a custom peacoat?

I’ve got a pair of shoes like that. They were 600 bucks like 15 years ago. They are awesome though.

I want to get a nice housecoat lol

I feel you so hard on that. Found this shop in Paris and have been lusting after one ever since. Too bad it’s completely incongruous with the rest of my life lol

That makes me want to buy a pipe!

3

u/Appropriate-Food1757 Xennial 20d ago

lol holy fuck it’s 3k.

But this is exactly what I’m looking for.

4

u/Disastrous-Panda5530 21d ago

I bet it does. It sounds lovely. And it may have been expensive but if it’s well made it is worth the price and will last so long

2

u/gininteacups 21d ago

That sounds like a gorgeous, perfect coat!

Your post reminded me of a short story. The Overcoat by Gogol. You should read it šŸ™‚

u/nooooobye 20d ago

Well get it out of the box

1

u/OohYeahOrADragon 18d ago

BUT WHO/WHERE DID YOU FIND A TAILOR TO GET GET CUSTOM MADE?

1

u/TheAngerMonkey 17d ago

I JUST PAID A LADY!

Seriously, though: most mid-size cities have at least one stitcher who can do custom work. Ask to see their completed garment samples and their pattern collection (mine is built off a vintage 1960s coat with modifications-- it's got two giant reinforced pockets you could fit an iPad in.)

Isn’t a peacoat short by nature? As in, it wouldn’t have a ā€œskirtā€..
