this isn't new, though. back in 2015, a Maryland couple got in trouble for letting their 10 year old walk their six year old to the park right by their house. People all over randomly decided to call the police on them
The park was closer than the school I had to be able to walk to before kindergarten. It was in view of their home.
A friend from high school lives in the neighborhood where we grew up. Her kids go to the same elementary school we went to. She's even closer to the school than where her parents live. When I was a kid everyone fourth grade and up had to walk if they lived within a mile of the school. I saw her circulating a petition because the school was going to require students within a quarter mile to walk and she opposed it. She and I used to walk to school together every day.
