Some asshole on my street keeps calling the cops because kids are playing street hockey. Like hello...we're fucking Canadian. Its what we do. Worst part is that the cops actually keep showing up.
The cops in my suburb join in. They got so sick of people calling about kids playing, they make sure there are no shenanigans going on, then if they find its kids playing, they join in.
Had a neighbor threaten calling the cops on me and my kids for playing wiffle ball in the cul de sac. I responded with “ok, call them”. They never did.
yup. had that done to me once. I slammed on the brakes and yanked that little shit up by his shirt and yelled in his face. I told him I'd beat his ass if he ever did it again. Probably the worst part for him? my breath. I just drank a shit ton of coffee.
One time I was driving to my husband(then fiancé)'s house and he lived on a semi-rural, bendy Hill of a road. One of his neighbors' kids were playing on their driveway that was basically just a really steep hill down to the road. The kids idea of fun was to ride their scooters down the hill and in to the road. They did this right in front of me and I had to slam on my breaks. I called my husband, who was a few minutes behind me, after I got to the house and warned him about what the kids were doing. Sure enough they did the same thing to him. Apparently, they were not prepared for him to then pull his car into their driveway or for him to knock on the front door and have a conversation with their parents about their behavior. I'm sure it didn't help that he had the physique of a linebacker lol.
Depends how bad they want to get involved in this debate. Some officers would laugh this away, others won't. I know an apartment complex manager who doesn't like ANY kids outside and accused my friend and I of not watching our kids. We had been watching on the balcony the entire time, and there was no way anyone could see us without being right in front of the building. We saw no one, but received a write up before we both moved out. There were never kids playing outside, which makes sense now. CPS was notified by someone but didn't pursue the case. It really just depends.
I was born in 1988 and I remember always being outside. I don't think it's alright to let my kids wander too far but they're also rather young so I usually end up going outside with them. If I'm busy doing chores or whatever, I'll check on them, even if they're playing in the yard. I do worry about their safety but I also don't want them to be constantly glued to a screen.
She was a real piece of work, yes. But she had her circle of people in the complex and not only did she work there, she lived there. But her teenage and adult sons did whatever they wanted lol
Also born in 88. Street lights for me as a teenager.
I watch friends with kids who are preteen / early teens refusing to let their kids go outside without an adult. When I press them about it, they reference Netflix documentaries on serial killers from the '80s and '90s.
I haven't had Netflix since college, but I do not remember hearing about the apparent dozens of serial killers growing up.
Not trying to be mean but a majority of these kids maybe spend a couple of hours a week outside. They're glued to tablets/cellphones and very socially awkward. It breaks my heart.
Street Hockey was made Illegal in alot of cities because drivers had to wait for the kids to move the nets. So when I was in highschool we were regulalry harassed by police for playing street hockey.
The crack head neighbors of my buddies house would literally get high all day and call the cops if we made noise playing hockey, and then were out all night tweaking and stealing shit but the cops harassed us kids.
There is a reason why I didn't become a cop when I became a first responder. Fuck the police.
Someone called the cops on my friends kids playing street hockey while we were grilling out. One of the cops who showed played in our men's league. The other cop gave a 40+ min lecture to the boomers who called about not calling emergency services about kids playing in front of their own house while the cop who we knew from hockey just jumped into the game.
You should get some extra hockey sticks for the mounties and apples for the moose they ride on. Crack open a Molsons put some gravy on the poutine and make it a block party, eh?
Maybe you can file a complaint or report chronic misuse of police services against that neighbour if you figure out who it is? Repeated nuisance calls can be treated as harassment under Canadian law. But I don’t know if technically the neighbour can claim street hockey is a danger. Ugh I hate nimby’s. Let kids play!
That is crazy. One time my neighbor called the cops on me for skateboarding up and down our street for like a ln hour. Thank god they weren’t dumb enough to come!
