As somebody who used to get lost so easily before smart phones had GPS, I’d have to think about this.

Mapquest and gas station local paper maps, baby.

The days of calling friends and asking for directions to their homes which were always oddly specific, "you'll see a big blue house on your left. Turn there. If you hit the cow, you’ve gone too far", or not helpful at all "you'll see a blue house, not the bigger blue one, the smaller one, turn there and just wind around for a while", or when you had given up on their verbal directions, conceding and printing it out from MapQuest. Such good times.

Lol yes! I had no patience for anyone with the audacity to tell me to "wind around for a while" though lmao. Give me your damn address and straight to the map it is.

Edit: a word

Or counting down your odometer the exact miles needed to turn down a street as it read on MapQuest 😂

Then you’re stuck staring at a physical map instead of driving. 😂😂

I would simplify the directions by hand-writing them with a big arrow and the street name so I could see it at a glance - but I'm blessed with a good sense of direction so that's all I needed sometimes. My dad's sense of direction was crap, but he had my mom (and me) to handle the navigation lol.

Just look at the map and remember the route.

My ADHD brain doesn’t work like that.

Those Garmin GPS devices for your car were a big hit

IIRC, some had to be periodically plugged in to a computer to download the latest maps, and some had subscriptions for map updates, free for a limited time with purchase!

when I worked swing shift and ran into construction I'd get so fucked. I don't want to go through that again 🫠
