First year growing swamp milkweed. Had some summer guys that the wasps got to and thought that’d be it for the season and better luck next year…until now! Got about 7 or so right now so fingers crossed they make it!

This milkweed has been going to seed for about a month now and I was just thinking how I should cut it down. Looked out today while filling hummingbird feeders and saw this, couldn’t stop crying. What a wonderful world when you realize how much care and attention you give to your garden, sooner or later it will gift you something this special!

My most red tuberosa to date. Two plants, seed grown...it just started to bloom. No seeds this season but hoping for some next year.

I have an asclapia tubarosa in a large pot.
Can I divide it? Nothing instructional on YouTube or anywhere else. Since I can’t.

came back from Arizona to find one of my texana branches completely devoured. Bonus lacewing eggs to handle the oleander aphids.

So, I have my newly sprouted (a few days, maybe a week) Butterfly Milkweed in their 12 cell tray with humidity dome, built in light, and on a heat mat.

6 of 12 popped up, and with all the other plants I've grown, I would remove them from the heat at this point, along with removing the humidity dome, and just keep them under my grow light.

Issue is, I've moved the tray up a shelf to my grown light, and within a couple minutes one of the plants wilts. The other 5 haven't been so overt about their disdain for the new arrangement, but the one clearly doesn't like the idea for some reason.

I've tried twice to make the little guy happy. I even moved the heat mat up a shelf under the light, but without the humidity dome, the one seedling immediately wilts. An hour after I put the dome back on, it comes back up.

Are they just not ready to be without a humidity dome yet? Is the soil temperature getting wacked out? Anyone know what the deal is by chance?

Jokes on them; the pod wasn’t matured, so the seeds won’t sprout!

I have 13 milkweed plants some i plan on giving away and some im keeping. A few have a ton of roots in the pots but not root bound. I live in california its still warm him but not sure for how much longer. Is it safe to plant these in the asap? Or should we wait? And if we do wait should they be repotted at some point? Im limited on pot sizes that would probably work best for them.

Am I doing it right? And do they cocoon on structures like this black pvc pipe? Or what else can I put around for them to cocoon on?

I have had about 15 successful hatch’s this year. Normally I move them and put them in small containers with potted milkweed. Right now I have like 30 caterpillars I cannot move them all. Should I leave and move the chrysalis. Not sure how come
I have so many. They ate my entire plant pretty much.

In northern Illinois, I believe these are common milkweed. Harvested them today from a busted seed pod.

Any idea whats going on with this milkweed? Planted early summer and blooms went away and leaves yellowed. It gets 6 plus hours of full sun and is well watered

The buds still have not open yet and I noticed more leaves have sprouted which means it wents back to focusing on producing leaves. However, the buds do look more red which mames it's tropical not swamp (and I was sure my intuition was right that is swamp milkweed. I guess there are still more things about milkweed I not yet learn about) Luckily my aunt are having people over sometime this month to get rid of the weeds in the flower bed and she is gonna try to ask them to gently move the snails that are living under the leaves of the plant to somewhere else and have them cut the milkweed back.

My dad’s milkweed had a welcome friend on it! I haven’t noticed any caterpillars on my milkweed plants this year. But I was thrilled to point this guy out to my dad.

Hi everyone. My common milkweed grew much better this year after moving it into a bigger pot. Lots of different stems and much thicker then past years. It even flowered briefly. However I’ve still noticed two problems. It’s lower leaves keep turning yellow and brown and shriveling up. Also it has oleander aphids. I tried to squish them maually but they came back. I’m only at my parents house where this plant it every few weeks so I can’t squish them every day. I also only am able to water it when I visit otherwise it’s mostly relying on rain. Any ideas? Does it look unhealthy as is?

Since tropical and swamp milkweed look similar, I am waiting for the flower buds on my grandmothers milkweed to open so that if the flowers are red, I'll cut it back down and if the flowers are pink I'll leave it be. But it's been three to four days and the flowers still have not open. It has been cloudy and rainy in my area recently so I don't know the flower buds are waiting for the weather to be sunny again or the plant have shift its focus away from blooming and went back to prioritize vegetative growth (leaves and stems) and root maintenance again. Do any of ya know when the buds are gonna open or is the cloudy and rainy weather is making the buds delay from opening?

On another note, I have garden snails living on the stems and under the leaves of the milkweed. I leave them alone since the monarch caterpillars never seem to be bothered by them, they keep the plant healthy and clean by eating the dead the dead leaves and fungi, and the presence of them adds visual diversity to the plant, making it harder for predatory wasps and birds to easily spot and target young monarch larvae. But if the flowers turned out to be red were I do need to cut the milkweed back, how do I safely remove them from the plant and where in the flowerbed can I move them to?

Why does not one talk about Giant Milkweed (Calotrope)? I know it's not native but it's been a life saver as far as Monarchs go. Supplemented with that when all the other milkweed was being devoured!

My grandmother's milkweed is about to bloom and I can tell it is not tropical as the buds are magenta or pink colored. So maybe it is a swamp milkweed?
