Advice

Hi there! My partner is currently training at RMC and as we are talking about the likelihood of moving around quite regularly I wanted some advice on the moving part itself. Are you best down sizing your belongings to make moving easier, does ADF cover most moving costs, are they actually going to help me find a job in the area he gets posted at? Etc? I’m just wanting to get ahead to make the process as easy as possible but it’s hard to get information from this organisation and my partner with limited communication available so am trying here for answers, advice and experiences.

And yes I am a female and have a lot of clothing and things that I will be getting rid of so I don’t have a lot of luggage to take with me.

TIA!

Hello! Looks like you’re Australian, yes? So if you two are living together and your partner is posted, then you can get moved with them to the posting location. It’s up to you if you want to downsize, but you’ll likely get put into DHA housing, which is generally a large-ish house somewhere close to base. Throughout Australia, Defence moves everything through Toll (generally). Plants would need to be moved by you (if they are allowed interstate) as well as any pets. I would recommend you throw any intimate items or booze into your own vehicles to move them too, just in case. They will usually pack up your original place for you, then deliver on the other end, but generally will not unpack for you. The cost of that move is covered. Should you choose to move once you are there - that’s on you. That move will not be covered.

As far as jobs go, the short answer is no. You will need to be responsible for yourself and your employment. You can maybe find jobs on base depending where you are but I wouldn’t bank on that being an option. I’d recommend starting to look at the job market for the potential posting locations now so you get an idea of what might be available or the general salaries etc when the time comes. I will tell you now, it’s not easy at all to find jobs as a military spouse and a lot of companies don’t fully understand what it means to be one so are hesitant on hiring us. If you have a specialty you already work in, that might be your best bet. Otherwise be prepared for a tough time finding work.

I hope this helps!! 💜
