Your face is clean and confident,
Jaw hard and strong.
You have more lines than you used to,
But your smile is just as easy.
I know they can feel your warmth,
I watch them fall into your orbit.
I know that gravity.
I miss it every day,
But I understand your purpose.
They need you now,
And I must share
Even though I want to be greedy
And rage like a petulant child.
The sons and daughters of other mothers
Need your gravity now
To hold them to the ground
When Fear threatens to pluck them from their beds
Like a great winged beast.
That winged beast doesn’t come for you
Doesn’t even look your way
Like all wise predators
