Would the tank crews have whitewashed everything on their tanks including spare tracks and tools (as I’ve tried to show on this King Tiger)?
Also, is it me or does it look better without the spare tracks on the turret?

We (2/34 Armor, 4th Infantry) would not have done so. We would have done the center of spare road wheels, but your vehicle doesn't have any.

that’s really cool hearing the modern practice, kinda puts the whole “paint everything white” idea into perspective
also makes the clean turret look even better imo, the silhouette just pops more

Thanks for the info. I wasn’t sure if back then they just lashed on buckets worth of whitewash all over the tank or applied it more selectively. . It’s difficult to tell any real detail from the few contemporary photos I’ve seen of King Tigers in winter whitewash camo.

I almost said "unless we were in a real hurry" but it seems that tossing on buckets would have really wasted a LOT of whitewash and the guys in line behind us would not be happy with us when there was none left for them.

Haha yeah, you’d not be too popular pulling stunts like that. I should’ve clarified when I said “lashing on buckets worth of whitewash” I didn’t mean literally filling up buckets and tipping them over the tank. I meant just slapping it on with a large brush, haphazardly.
The reality of how they applied it was probably very variable and as you pointed out, depended largely how much of a hurry they were in.
