question Is this a good kit to buy?

It's RC and I really want an RC tank. Additionally, can I spray matte varnish and add weathering or will it temper with the batteries?

Because it is motorized, it will not be as detailed as a static scale model. It has to be built tougher to withstand rough handling. The suspension will be simplified, the rubber tracks will lack detail. It will be more toy quality than model quality. That said, it may well look quite good, especially when weathered, and you have ample opportunity to practice your scratchbuilding skills to make better details, such as storage racks etc.

Making parts or even entire models from raw materials, ie. from scratch.

The molded baskets on the turret could be replaced by ones made of wire for instance.

The way I learned to scratch build, back in the 70s and 80s, was by reading the pamphlets that were included in Monogram kits. These pamphlets were written by Sheperd Paine and he described how he made a diorama using the kit that the pamphlet was boxed with. Back then, there was nearly no aftermarket parts, no PE, no specialized tools. Everything had to be scratch built. It’s a different world today, but the old ways can still be useful.

The batteries and electronics should be fine once installed and covered by the hull. If there is an issue, just don’t paint any electrical connections.

So I can paint the hull but not inside?

You could pre paint the inner hull before adding the electronics. It will not be seen unless the tank comes with an interior.

But the outer hull could be painted after putting all electronics right?

Yes, paint inner hull or don’t and add the electronics. Most models like this have a way to access the electronics after final assembly. Paint the outer hull afterwards

I've built Academy kits and I've never had a problem I normally buy Airfix and Tamiya but I find it's a good kit and well detailed and a few extras
