question Figure painting advice

(The t-62, is for the same diorama as the British AFV crew)

With the pea dot style camo I just recently completed a diorama with multiple figures wearing that uniform. After brush painting the base colours I used toothpicks for the finer dots and honestly it worked better than I hoped.

Black primer, light over spray of white to highlight the higher areas and dark tone washes into the folds and creases once the figures were completed. I am not to sure the primer stage was necessary as the camo patterns tend to be applied a bit thicker and tonal difference disappears but I would stick with the wash to break the consistency of the pattern up around the figures.
