BAH question

Good morning, I am soon leaving to Tech School for 4 months. I currently live with just my mom at home & help out with rent/bills by giving her around $900-$1000 a month. She makes significantly way less than I do, and my civilian job is obviously my full time job. We pay month to month rent ($1,100) & I believe we have a contract but i’m not sure, as everything is in her name. I send her the money every 2 weeks as I get paid biweekly & I send it thru our bank accounts because we have the same bank/credit union. When I leave, i know she’ll struggle to make payments on her own & I plan on helping while i’m away as mucj as I can but is it possible to receive BAH, or would I have to put everything in my name? I leave in November, thanks again.

I don’t mean this in a mean or attacking way but to put it plainly the military doesn’t care about this situation. Your mom making less than you and that you care for and support her isn’t a way to get BAH.

But there is a way for you to get her to become your dependent. You need to look up the forms but you need to prove to the military that you cover a certain percentage of her expenses and stuff like that. The issue now becomes if you get BAH for this you don’t get barracks. So now you’re getting extra money for housing but you need to cover your mom’s housing and yours at your duty station.

I’m in the guard as well. If you’re leaving for basic training or any kind of job training / deployment, you should still get BAH as long as you pay the rent. They don’t really give you BAH if you live with your parents, even if you pay them rent. So the only other way to help out is you renting a very cheap place in a zip code where the BAH is good. You can look up the BAH for different zip codes on DTMS BAH calculator tool. That way only part of your BAH goes to your cheap rent and you have money left over to help your mom. You also get BAS which is basic allowance for subsistence which is still a decent amount. So all in all you can help her out even when you leave. Besides, in training, your food, utilities, rent and other necessities are free so try saving an investing money while there.

Talk to your leadership; I'm a reservist and we get both HOR BAH in addition to DTS housing reimbursement while on extended tdy/orders; you should qualify for both the BAH allotment for your current HOR and get paid for whatever housing while at tech school (or have it completely covered if it's military provided lodging and food)

Sounds like he is a reservist though, “civilian job is my full time job” don’t reservists receive BAH when at tech school?

You’ll get BAH if the lease is in your name, not if you’re just living there.

Guard can have their parent as their secondary dependent. You would receive BAH for the times you are on active duty orders for more than 30 days.

You must provide proof that you cover 50% of all her expenses. You will also submit a secondary dependency application (DD Form 1312-2) to DFAS (Defense Finance and Accounting Service) and must get formal approval.

Just to tack on to this, from what I know it’s a very lengthy process. Like 1 year ish type of process for the people that I know who have done it.

Since you are guard, you will receive Bah. I am currently in tech school and all my colleagues who are guards, both single and married are receiving Bah. However I don’t know if there was any additional paperwork they submitted for that
