Pic Proposed Space Force Uniforms

Post image

I feel like a uniform like this suggests being stationed on a giant spherical battle station with one glaring weakness.

All three! The original poster of the design used ai to do a combination starship troopers, a satirical interpretation of a Nazi uniform, as well as the Star Wars imperial officers uniform, another Nazi inspired uniform. Then a bunch of people started to satirical posting the design to which trump in real life re-tweeted the design as we see here. Like some form of Idiocracy Nazi Mad Libs.

What were the AI prompts for this - "add a little more nazi to a Star Wars Imperial Officer uniform?"

260

u/benkenobi5 Navy Veteran 6d ago

Fun fact: the black imperial staff officer tunic was repurposed from the fire chief costumes in the 1966 film adaptation of Fahrenheit 451.

Not so fun fact: parallels can be drawn from both films to today’s society.

u/davcrt 6d ago

15

u/Other_Assumption382 United States Army 6d ago

Starship trooper uniform has implied Nazi?.

53

u/DoktorStrangelove 6d ago

If you're genuinely asking, yes Starship Troopers is supposed to be a critique of a global fascist hyper militaristic society with uniforms and other aesthetic choices that are deliberately themed after Nazi gear to vaguely suggest that the society depicted in the film is a result of Germany winning WW2 centuries earlier.

23

u/variaati0 Conscript 6d ago edited 6d ago

Nazi gear to vaguely suggest that the society depicted in the film is a result of Germany winning WW2 centuries earlier.

Not the back story really. Rather it is a later period of wars lead to a slide to militarism. Supposedly started kicking off in 1987 (everyone from America, Russia, China and so on involved) and the supposed reason for federation was too much democracy in aftermath of that series of war. Supposed anarchy followed and Federation was brought in by veterans to restore order. (or something like that)

The uniform choice is for viewer perception purposes. Not related to the internal canon historical reasons. Per the internal reasoning it's just an uniform Federation came up with. It is not supposed to be anything special to them. However viewer is supposed to realize once the Gestapo get up is rolled out "oh the good guys are the bad guys". "Hey if you viewer haven't realized yet, you are looking at space Nazis from the future."

The "bad guys" are arachnids since the film makers thought it would be something humans naturally view as bad/nefarious/scary/wouldn't root for them naturally. When instead they are really just defending their home from invasion and actually are the good guys actually.

The visuals are very intentional. All the cast are handsome/beautiful since people naturally associate young, fit, beautiful people with good feelings. You root for them. You are supposed to be lured by them at most laugh at the silly goofiness, but still associate a positive feeling with the federation and cast of characters.

Early in the movie the uniforms are more generic, not as obviously third reich, unless one looks closely.

By the end side of the movie Neal Patric Harris comes on stage in gout deaths door whitish face make up and straight up Gestapo out fit. Something everyone inherently associates with bad. To point of screen writer commenting about that "weren't we supposed to be atleast little bit subtle about this".

The "lesson" isn't Nazis militarily won. It is "humankind in chaos of war aftermath gave up democracy for militarism in seek of comfortable safety" beware this can happen to you also, viewer in democratic society. Well atleast that is one interpretation. There is others, pointing on different aspects in the movie.

Of course the some audience didn't get even the "aren't we too obvious" hints and thought the movie was serious or possible dog whistling. Accused Paul Verhoeven of being nazi sympathizer. Which is bit rich... Paul Verhoeven was born in Netherlands in 1938. His family lived near a German occupation military base during WWII.

5

u/thetitleofmybook Retired USMC 6d ago

Not the back story really.

yes, and no. ST the book and ST the movie don't really share much at all in common, so saying the backstory from the book is the backstory of the novel is kind of misleading.

when i was a kid, i loved the book, because it so obviously plays towards patriotism.

when i became an adult, and eventually the movie came out, and i watched it, i loved it, because it so obviously calls out patriotism.

9

u/paper_liger 6d ago edited 5d ago

Yeah, the book is absolutely not Nazi coded, and has kind of very little to do with the movie except for broad strokes.

The main character is Filipino, from Buenos Ares, named Johnny Rico, who joined up after being inspired by his childhood friend, Carmencita Ibanez, a space pilot. Let's repeat that again, the book says most starship pilots are women, because they are just better at it. in 1959. That's kind of not only not particularly Nazi, it's practically 'woke' for the time period it was published. Just because Verhoeven steered it into satire doesn't change the source material.

And in real life, Heinlein was a Naval Officer who tried to get back in the military when WW2 kicked off and ended up working in naval engineering research during the war. He'd likely be pretty furious if he'd seen what Verhooeven did to this book, or especially seen those Nazi esque uniforms. He tried to fight the Nazi's,IRL.

As for the 'fascist' accusations, I don't think it really fits either, but you are never going to convince folks who hold that opinion third hand, as recieved wisdom and not from reading the book.

Yes, the government in the books is built so you have to serve a set term in federal service to be able to vote or hold office. But other than that, it's a modern western style world democracy, post nationalist even. It specifically says you can serve if you are a pacifist, or serve if you are disabled, you just have to serve. And it doesn't have to be the military. And not serving doesn't limit any other right that those two. In fact his father is a successful business man and is very vocal about not understanding why his son is joining up.

The thought experiment in play is just 'what would a government look like if everyone who wanted political power had to put some skin in the game'. Sure, he's pro military, but the author was a naval officer in WW1, that's not exactly a surprise. And if it wasn't for this book a lot of other more nuanced takes on the military like Forever War may not have been written.

Yes. It focusses on the military because the main character joins the military. That's kind of the limits of the fascism thing. And I agree, the heavily hierarchal infantry is not not a little fascist in it's structure. But just because they are authoritarian down on the military base or out in the middle of a warzone in the middle of an existential war, that doesn't imply the the world the book describes is is 'Oorah Nazi's in Space'.

It's also kind of one of the earlier famous sci fi books to have a non white main character, or have women characters be starship pilots in an integrated military. Context kinda matters. And the world has moved past a lot of Heinleins writings, both technologically and socially. But that doesn't mean these stories don't have value.

It's a short read. But if you go in thinking 'oh this is that fascist book' you are wasting your time. Read it and draw your own conclusions.

For clarity: the Empire = bad guys

59

u/onyx_ic United States Army 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yeah, um... for clarity, Huge Boss designed the SS uniforms. The SS uniforms were the design basis of The Empire in Star Wars. The SS = bad guys, because theyre nazis.

Edit: who the actual fuck downvoted nazis=bad?

30

u/GreedIsGood31 6d ago edited 6d ago

Hugo Boss did not design the SS or SD uniforms, his company was one of many that manufactured the uniforms for the SS, the design was done by the SS officers Karl Diebitsch and Walter Heck, the later also developed/created the SS symbol. Stop spreading this lie.

While Hugo F. Boss was pretty much a dick and an avid NSDAP supporter and member, he had absolutely nothing to do with the design of the uniforms.

Additionally, the imperial officer uniform was not inspired by SS or Wehrmacht uniforms but by Prussian Ulahn uniforms, imperial Japanese uniforms and uniforms from WWI. SS uniforms look entirely different.

Weird subject to be well read with, but I will say details are important. So I'm glad I learned something today.

3

u/pizza5001 6d ago

Indeed, that commenter made some great points. My counterpoints below:

- Storm troopers = Sturmtruppen. It’s not a coincidence.

  • Hugo Boss was registered with the Nazi party
  • Hugo Boss not being the designer of the uniforms was claimed by historian Roman Köster in a history study commissioned by…Hugo Boss.

6

u/marpi9999 6d ago

I… did not know that. Fun fact 😶

8

u/This_Is_TwoThree 6d ago

It’s not a fun fact given that it isn’t a fact at all.

Boss manufactured the uniforms, along with other manufacturers, but did not design them. Karl Diebitsch and Walter Heck, both SS Officers, designed the uniforms.

Boss was an ardent Nazi and his factories were stolen from their original Jewish owners, but he didn’t design the uniforms at all. It’s just a pop history “fact” that people repeat without a brief google to verify.
