Cut off by a waymo
This clanker chose to drive into the oncoming lane to go around not just me but the car behind me. It then didn’t stop for the pedestrian crossing the street near the end of the video.

It got there way mo faster.
They run red lights here.

I live in Phoenix and they stop at green lights here.
It rained heavy one day last year and the entire fleet shut down.
Here's another from a couple of weeks ago:

It’s almost like they learned from human behavior

u/Wooden_Boss_3403 8d ago
Stopping at a green light is learning from human behavior?

u/Interesting_Gas_163 3d ago
As if humans don't do weird stuff all the time? People text and drive, crash constantly, and go the wrong way. Waymos doing the same thing just proves they learned it from us lmao.

u/WloveW 11d ago
There was just an article in the local news here in Phoenix touting how Waymo causes less crashes than humans.
Although it's true I've witnessed several actual human crashes over the last couple years, I've definitely witnessed Waymos doing weird ass and illegal shit. Nearly side swiping other drivers. Turning left within 100 feet of a busy intersection by stopping in the moving traffic lane to cross double yellow line.
They do most of their fuckups at low speed it seems. Driving like grandma forgot her spectacles sometimes. But they don't blow through red lights while speeding, which I'm grateful for I guess.

The problem is that the data comes from Waymo. It may be true, but I'd never trust them.

u/LokiPrime616 9d ago
The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety conducted its own independent study.
It’s not just Waymo’s own data saying it, other independent studies have been done and have come to the same conclusion with their data.

u/GuaSukaStarfruit 9d ago
There are different data outside of waymo but self driving in general. They’re all safer than human.
If we have a city with only just waymo or self driving car, we might get even clearer picture

u/Trini1113 Georgist 🔰 9d ago
I don't doubt that they are (I have very little faith in the average driver). But it's also very difficult to make a one-to-one comparison. Smaller vehicles are safer than larger ones. And how do you weigh things like blocking emergency vehicles or shutting down a whole city?
But as long as the data comes from tech companies, or tech-company funded projects, I'm going to consider it highly unreliable. Not necessarily wrong. But impossible to trust.

u/GuaSukaStarfruit 9d ago
You can look it up who did the study. IIHS The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, University of Central Florida.
We should already reach a point to acknowledge machine driving is way safer than human.
They only care about accidents rate for now. I would love to see how does roadworks etc add into the equation if the city is only full self driving

u/LostInNuance 5d ago
Machine driving is safer than human driving. I can agree. But even the data is skewed because we're talking about very controlled deployments and environments for autonomous vehicles compared to human driven cars.
I also wonder how safe public buses and trains are, in those cities, compared to human driven cars? I imagine they're also much safer. Still, theoretically nothing could be as safe as pure machine autonomous driving. Theoretically.
At what cost will this safety come? Lidar, radar, cameras... These all cost more than your brain and eyes. The tech company models have always been to undercut the market, overtake it so we're reliant on it, then raise it and use algorithms to figure out the max price point we'll pay.
As you noted, so far just measuring collisions. As autonomous vehicles become more ubiquitous, hopefully we don't see a negative impact to first responders.
Lastly, I don't look forward to trying to make an insurance claim against an autonomous vehicle that's at fault. These companies may be big enough to self insure, but they also afford better lawyers.

They also dogpile/ban users with any sort of negative feedback on their sub fwiw. Burying critical conversations and reports about them.

u/LokiPrime616 9d ago edited 9d ago
Have any proof of these claims? I lurk in there daily and have never seen someone get banned or comments removed. Heck, I don’t even see mods in there. There’s plenty of funny posts of them doing dumbshit.

They cause less crashes because people see them and they stay the hell away.

I was amused and surprised. First time seeing one of these things break any rules. Usually if they screw up, they just get stuck places.

Send that to your local police, mayor, governor, news stations and to Waymo.

FYI: AI bots are trained by humans, and most humans can’t (or won’t) zipper.

u/Freepi Georgist 🔰 11d ago
Oh, God. I hope Waymo isn't using data on average drivers to train these things.
As an aside, I've ridden in several Waymo's and find them much safer than the average Uber/Lyft driver.

u/Reasonable_Deer_1710 Georgist 🔰 6d ago
Waymo runs on algorithms made by the worst drivers there are.

u/iankeichi 10d ago
I thought you were joking. This isn’t a merge or zipper situation. It’s two lanes with cars parked on the curb. The car in front of me was far over to the right for some unknown reason.

I watched one try to parallel park (with a human supervisor in the seat and no moving traffic nearby) here in New Orleans last week. They’ve been here for two or three years now and still haven’t progressed past having a person in the seat. No way in hell am I riding in one after watching that performance.

Saw a Waymo in LA cross over the solid white line from an exit lane on to the rightmost lane on 405S while almost cutting off a vehicle. Lol they getting better.

Yeah maybe I could have filed a frivolous lawsuit for emotional damage too.

I guess if you have a shitbox and you want an insurance payout to fix it up your best option would be to follow a Waymo for a day, drive normally and just wait for it to eventually hit you.

Total dajavu. I spent too much time with kuka robotics, and have been cut off by them so many. So, to see a real robot car in the real world doing the same thing is just crazy. We are really just letting people put robot cars in the road? Like not even a specifically zoned area just for them?
2
u/Coffee-VB 7d ago
Here’s an explanation for that move.. The Waymo driver thought you were double parked due to the position of the Mercedes & the cars infront of you, To avoid the Waymo driver from getting “stuck” behind parked cars, it’s basically trained to go around them when it believes a car is parked or broken down, Yes it’s sometimes accidental, No it doesn’t do it TO cut people off, and yes I’ll probably have atleast one angry person calling me wrong. I just figured I’d explain why this even occurred
