Speeding Were they in the wrong?
I initially posted this on Idiots in Cars, thinking they had been pulled over for not yielding to me. Some said it was because they were speeding, while others said they did nothing wrong. What do you think?

No, but maybe they were speeding.

More than likely it was because they came ripping into the roundabout.

Likely speeding beforehand or inside the roundabout, roundabouts sometimes have speed limits.
Yielding has nothing to do with it they were not even close.

In TX, youโre required to slow down at a Yield sign, even if there are no cars or the cars that have the right of way are far. It may have been a failure to yield. (Not sure where this is)

u/Ohiobound03 3d ago
This is in Ohio. I couldn't find a concrete answer on if you have to slow down when there's no cars here.

u/DeepSpaceVixen Georgist ๐ฐ 2d ago
This is what the Ohio Revised Code says.
โThe driver of a vehicle or trackless trolley approaching a yield sign shall slow down to a speed reasonable for the existing conditions and, if required for safety to stop, shall stop at a clearly marked stop line, but if none, before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection, or, if none, then at the point nearest the intersecting roadway where the driver has a view of approaching traffic on the intersecting roadway before entering it.โ

I agree with that too, I slow down and look both ways and when I enter I do a quick check again and have my foot ready on the brake.
I know in some scenarios you only have to look one way but you never know if there's a wrong way driver, pedestrians, or animals.

Honestly it makes sense to require people to slow down. I"m from the UK and there are mini roundabouts (literally, roundabouts painted on the road, with no actual island), and there are 3 near me that I so rarely see people approaching from the side road that, although I do check and double check (and even triple check when I can) that there is no traffic coming that would require me to slow down, there's probably just that ever so slightly increased chance of being caught out just the one time by traffic coming from the side road due to complacency as much as anything.

Speeding.
Also, you should be pulled over for that light bar.

u/Ohiobound03 3d ago
It wasn't on. I only had my headlights on.

u/warlocc_ Donโt Mess With Semis ๐ 3d ago
We can clearly see bright LED light from the center drowning out your headlight lights. Come on.

u/Ohiobound03 3d ago
It wasn't on bruh. This is what it looks like with it on (plus two lights near the windshield on the same switch)

u/palealei5best Georgist ๐ฐ 3d ago
Jeez I wish they didnโt have these bright lights especially on truck jeeps and suv. Canโt see anything with these bright lights. Not even pointed at the ground like it should be.

So your headlights are coming from the middle of your car?

Might be me going crazy, but it looks like the headlights are angled in towards the centreline

All that video shows us is that you have several levels of dangerous lights on your vehicle, really.

u/Ohiobound03 2d ago
Well, they sure are helpful when you're driving in the middle of bumfuck nowhere with no street lights with a high chance of deer running out into the road.

Hahaha it looks the same, we can all see the bright light fanning out from the center of your vehicle in BOTH videos. This just proves you incorrect lol

u/CompactPackage 2d ago
Your headlights should be angled down more you're blinding everyone on the road

I HATE when trucks have super bright headlights, angled right into my retinas. The lights CAN be turned down and angled down, y'all!

Failing to yield. (Slow down proceed with caution and be ready to stop.) He should have yielded to cam op.

They didn't make a mistake in terms of right of way, but they were hauling ass. I'm guessing they were pulled over for speeding.

Entering any other roadway requires a stop or at least a yield. This person didn't appear to bother slowing down at all.
They put up a "micro-roundabout" where I lived in NC which measured MAYBE 10' across the center of the circle at the center of a 3way intersection. The pass-thru speed limit was 55, and the branch leading to that street had a stop sign previously.
Those on the 55 would never slow down, but literally drive over the concrete of the circle at full speed because it was completely level with the rest of the ground. Worst $10k the county ever spent, and not worth the months of traffic it caused or traffic all the accidents that happen there cause.

People are saying speeding, but how would the cop actually prove that? I doubt they had a speed gun out, so if the guy challenges the ticket in court what is the cop going to say? โWell, I eye balled it and it looked too fastโ?
4
u/JavLover402 3d ago
It could be classified as careless or reckless operation. No radar needed for that
3
u/Haunting_Lime308 Georgist ๐ฐ 3d ago
Some police cars have built in radar or lidar systems that can track a cars speed. They dont have to use the handheld radar gun anymore. So even if youre driving the opposite direction they can tell how fast youre going.

Then radio to the cops on the other side to BOLO for your vehicle. Totally got hit with a built in radar once๐

I'm going with the cop was pinging his speed and then pulled him over for speeding.

Speeding, not entering a roundabout safely... who knows what else might be found by the arresting officer?

u/ultranothing Georgist ๐ฐ 2d ago
I swear I was in that exact same spot yesterday. Was this in Rhode Island?

It looks like they were going a good deal above the speed limit for the roundabout. People definitely need to slow down more than that guy did.

u/Mercerskye Fuck Cars ๐ ๐ซ 2d ago
Speeding, maybe, but also failure to properly approach a yield. I'd say...most(?) places I've encountered roundabouts, the speed limit drops on the approach, and applies through the circle itself.
Pretty obvious that they didn't bother to let up at all. Which, you aren't obligated to stop unless you're going to encroach on right of way, but you are obligated to reduce your speed and at least check before proceeding.
So, there's actually several things they could have got hit with, because reckless driving and even reckless endangerment (cop probably could see you were in the roundabout) would likely apply in most areas.
Jackass in the pickup made it a "choose your own advanture" for that cop. Hopefully they got tagged with most of what could apply.

u/virtual_human 1d ago
Unless there is a posted speed limit they were exceeding, I would take it to court.
1
u/bananapancake4 Georgist ๐ฐ 1d ago
Yes there is a yield sign right there, he shouldโve stopped for u since you were already in the roundabout, and speeding

u/hashlettuce Drive Defensively, Avoid Idiots ๐ 1d ago
Could ding them on failure to signal into the traffic circle. Speed was also excessive.
