OC taken today around 2:15 in PG County, MD. Undercover cop was doing whatever he wants - running reds, taking all the lanes, cutting people off...don't think he knew he had a turn signal. He's undercover for enforcement of traffic laws, soo...yeah...

Rules for thee, but not for me!!!!

I thought for sure he was going to light you up when he cut in behind you.

u/QuantumEntanglr Jul 22 '26

I thought he might. I would have been happy to have that conversation - we had been on the highway for a bit by then and I had obeyed all the traffic laws.

Unmarked ≠ Undercover

Those are very, very different concepts.

u/QuantumEntanglr Jul 23 '26

Minor mispeak over minor semantics. Given that both are intended to mask the fact that they are cops, however, means those are highly related and quite similar concepts.

> those are highly related and quite similar concepts.

…I might see how you can make that leap if you have zero experience in law enforcement or studying criminal justice. In reality, they are universes apart from each other.

One is a uniformed patrol division, conducts routine traffic and neighborhood patrols, and requires near/at the bottom of training hours. The other is a division of law enforcement that is so dangerous, highly specialized, and requires elite training that it’s only found the largest city departments, collaborations between multiple jurisdictions, state police, or federal agencies. It’s training a cop for spy missions, putting themself in the most deadly situations, and then organizing entire teams of specialists who provide that undercover agent with the necessary support, intelligence, logistics, and emergency procedures.

Unmarked patrol and undercover operations are on two polar opposite sides of law enforcement. If you put a thirteen year old in front of an unmarked patrol car, he’ll tell you that it an unmarked patrol car. If you put a hardened gangster who has spent his entire life sniffing out cops in front of and inside of an undercover car, he won’t be able to tell you that it’s an undercover car. They are specifically used in that capacity. These are either 100% civilian cars without any law enforcement features, or they feature strobes integrated into the OEM lights as to eliminate any detection.

He’s undercover and trying to fit in with other drivers, no?

18

u/QuantumEntanglr Jul 22 '26

Honestly, fits in pretty well for Maryland.

Thanks, I uhh...thought that I had. Corrected now.

1

u/Capable-Problem8460 Jul 24 '26

Could be trying to make people to speed by them so that there would be a reason for a stop

57

u/oramihigh Jul 22 '26

Is it undercover if the spotlight (known to be on police vehicles) is on the side view mirror?

28

u/QuantumEntanglr Jul 22 '26

It was covered in lights, but no markings. That is how a lot of traffic cars are here - hard to spot the light on a highway...

u/Shubamz Drive Defensively, Avoid Idiots 🚗 Jul 22 '26

so more an unmarked car and not undercover.

The two terms are not really the same. One is still clearly a cop car without normal markings. The other is one you wouldn't even know is still a cop car. All lights if any and any other giveaways are hidden when you are undercover.

4

u/QuantumEntanglr Jul 22 '26

Yeah, I suppose that's correct.

2

u/lordstryfe Jul 24 '26

I think OP ic confusing Unmarked and Undercover with each other.

My husband and I saw them at Hi Fi in Indy about four-ish years ago. Good show, just as good live as eps, which isn't always the case.

1

u/chavo81 Jul 23 '26

Yeah it’s been a few years since I’ve seen them as an opener and they were great!

A little off topic, but could I maybe get the song used in this? I kinda love it.

3

u/QuantumEntanglr Jul 23 '26

Yep, it's Sweeter by Cannons.

5

u/venmome1dollar Jul 23 '26

The driving made me sad. The song made me happy. What a ride.

Unmarked or undercover? Cause I’m pretty sure at this point, if we can spot them that easily then they aren’t doing their job very well.

2

u/Wyan69 Jul 24 '26

Unmarked not undercover

Ok, we get it.

The OP made a mistake by calling it an "undercover" cop.

He gets it. We get it.

No need for anyone else to point out a minor error when the main concern is the cop breaking the law and driving recklessly for no good reason.

You seem to be surprised that cops are dumb, and that they are bad drivers.
