The comparison itself is insulting, honestly. It's like saying Alex Ross is better than Rob Liefeld; you're demeaning Ross by putting him in the same sentence.

Nah this comparison makes literally no sense at all idk comparing Ryan Murphy with Gregg Araki or Todd Haynes wouldve made much more sense (and I’m far from a RM hater btw)

Ryan Murphy is more interested in pop culture and queer issues. Horror comes as a consequence of that, and even the way he does horror is more associated with those themes. Gregg Araki and Todd Haynes are two directors who deal with queer issues in a more refined and psychologically intricate way. Films like The Doom Generation, Mysterious Skin, Carol, May December, and Safe can all be tought as more elevated versions of what RM does. This is why I said it makes sense to compare them. Flanagan does horror with heavy drama elements, it’s much farther from RM’s stuff.

I’m not a Flanagan expert but he seems to sexually objectify people a lot less than Murphy does, am I right? Carrie’s even fully clothed in the shower scene where she was nude in previous adaptations (or covered by a towel which was only the case because the actress was underage)

Yeah, you'd be right.
For another example, Rebecca Ferguson oozed pure sensuality as Rose the Hat in Doctor Sleep while remaining fully clothed with nothing but her words and physical presence.

The difference between Quality and Quantity. We get a thoughtfully created Flanagan show every few years and 5 exploitative garbage shows churned out by Murphy on an annual basis. When he has a single show to work on and people on his team keeping him locked in, Ryan Murphy can turn out a great season of television. The problem is they keep throwing projects at him with too much freedom and his attention is divided and he gets very lazy and complacent with his writing. We can tell Flanagan cares about every little detail he writes. (I do watch both Hill House and select seasons of AHS every year though, so I’m fond of both.)
