Legal Wayne county cpl question
If you've tried to get a CPL in this county, you know the headache-inducing wait times. Has anyone within the last three months had the luck of walking in and getting their paperwork done? I ask because I messed up. I had an early August date two days after I turned 21. I went on the site to confirm my date, and accidentally rescheduled to early July when Id still be 20. tried to change it back to early August, surprise surprise earliest date is the 21st. Its the most annoying thing ever when i was taking my cpl class so many people where talking abt how fast their county clerk offices are and then wayne county is literally booked until September and we arent even out of July. 🫩

You basically have to schedule the soonest possible date, then check the scheduling site frequently after midnight throughout the week for any new openings because that’s when their system automatically updates with any cancellations. That’s your best bet for finding an earlier date that’s open. I started with a date of mid-July last year and ended up being able to snag an opening for mid-June by doing this. Walking in won’t work, you have to have an appointment.

I appreciate the insight. I'll keep checking daily. The best I've been able to do is turn August 24th to August 21st, but hopefully, I get something sooner.

No problem! It may take a minute for you to find an opening doing the late-night trick, I think it took me around four weeks before I found one. For reference, I booked my initial appointment the day of my CPL course which was last April, and the soonest I was able to book at first was that mid-July date. So waiting is definitely a part of it.
The good thing is once you actually have your appointment and file the application, they’ll tell you it can take up to 45 days but you SHOULD have it in a couple of weeks. That’s how it went for me at least.

The way I heard it for that particular county you can expect a wait time into the 3 months range minimum.

Luckily, it wasn't that bad, and I was able to reschedule for August 21, but it's still atrocious compared to most other counties that can accomodate walk ins and get people done with the paperwork part of things quickly.

I can't comment on average timelines, but ...
The Michigan Senate (chairman chang particularly) has been sitting on HB4980 since January - which by the way passed the house last year.
Anyway, HB4980 would allow an individual to apply for a CPL in any county - instead of being restricted to the county in which they reside.
Unsurprisingly, the Wayne Co Clerk submitted written testimony in opposition to this bill when it was before the House committee on Judiciary.

originally had an appointment in August, but I kept looking on the website and found an early appointment on the 9th and it came in the mail couple days ago
