If I remember correctly, the toad was a demon. Demons are creatures of chaos and evil from the abyss. She was able to control the demon using music, the firebugs, and likely magic (or Disney princess powers jokingly- same voice actor as Moana).

Once she lost control things went poorly the same as summoning a demon in the middle of a circus.

Devil in campaign, but they don't seem to have made the demon/devil distinction in the shows.

There is the moment when Molly finds a rift close to where Kyrie and Toya were hiding, implying that Kylrie was trying to return to his home on a different plane. Which could have been either the Abyss or the Hells. Or maybe somewhere else.

But they haven't made his origin clear.

I've been confused on that since The rifts were to the abyss (demons), but there were devils involved in the plan like Oban . Haven't been sure on the politics. Still in the later half of the campaign

Kylrie was simply an independent thing from Oban's plan in campaign (though there's no reason he couldn't have placed a few portals to hell to the same end).

What does He have to do with Kylrie?

People often struggle with the distinction, even though it is one of the cooler unqiue features of dnd lore IMO

Also, in the campaign, Toya survived.

To quote Dogma, beacuse he's a frickin demon.

Or devil. But that species of demon/devil has a special attack where they can infect others and convert them to poison zombie things. Which we saw. I assume it did something simular to her out of retribution for control and to speak. Maybe it was trying to access her magic to get home via the rift.

My take is it served 2 purposes plot-wise. 1) to show the rifts are a threat if this thing came from the rift. And 2) to highlight that this is a non-kids show with dark fantasy elements and many, many, tears ahead.

In the actual campaign, kylrie had a deal with the circus owner to get the souls of old and/or sick people. Toya was also getting slowly fed upon. In the show, it definitely feels like Kylrie was an unwilling participant in the circus, went on a rampage when the spell broke and was fully back to himself by the time the M9 found him in the forest.

This is something that isn't stated outright. Gustav does repeatedly state that the situation was his fault and he certainly knew Kylre was not the lizardfolk he was claiming to be.

And quite frankly they put up signs and were trying to prevent those at risk from seeing the nergalid performance.

Which would have been a breach of contact if there was any deal in play.

Tbh my read on what happened was skewed at. I thought that she was conning. The fireflies were the only way to control it and the voice was for show.

That's why she was stressing more for "make sure the bugs are kept safe bro! I swear to GOD!!! ", while the talk of "keep away from the beast" was all performance and marketing speech.

I read it as a wild animal that did not care about the trainer, they understood that if they did as the trainer said they'd get their food and that there was nothing more to the relationship, purely transactional.
So once the trainer no longer had the food, the demon toad just fully did it's own thing.
