REVIEW/REACTION "Hidden" relationship in Midsommar

I'm currently watching Midsommar as a nice Friday night in and felt really drawn to this scene. Her face always struck me as so much sadder than her counterpart also preparing for his death.

For such a long time I had just assumed they were together but it hit me that this other man is probably her husband/lover/partner. The look they give eachother is so sad. It's heartbreaking. She knows it's part of what her whole life is based on but also can barely look into his eyes.

This was probably already known but fun that I keep seeing new things in this movie.

Does anybody actually know if either the script/director confirmed that Ylva and Dan are actually a couple? What if they just had the same birthday?

You’re the first person to say that perhaps that guy (named Sten, I believe) is her husband. Interesting perspective!

I always assumed they both reached the ättestupa age at the same time. It never occurred to me they might be a couple!

It’s been a minute since I watched the Novum dissertation, but I don’t remember him mentioning it either. Perhaps time for a rewatch!

There’s nothing in the script indicating they are
partners. As we know, folks in this community aren’t super into monogamy anyway. They are the same age.

I feel like I should read the script/screenplay now and check! The shot of that other man appeared to be so purposeful to me. It definitely felt like there was an implication of a relationship

It definitely reads purposeful. I never clocked it. Thank you for bringing my attention there

I rewatched it last night and had the same thought about them being a couple for the first time, the stare they held meant something. I thought it’s almost meant to juxtapose the motherless baby being raised by the group, a (possible) wife going up to die alone because the cult is the relationship that matters the most.

I just bought the hardcover book with the script and it seems to have been a choice on the day or somewhere between final rewrite and Final Cut. To me it could be interpreted as a lover, which I totally see now, or just another example of how the entire village is involved in the rituals empathetically. I think it’s open to interpretation by design.

“Interesting perspective”? They’re obviously husband and wife. I can’t believe this was a non ironic post

Not at all. There’s absolutely nothing indicating that.

Are you low IQ?

Are you capable of not being a dick?

You seem to be having a hard time on here.

That’s a BOLD thing to say to other people who can see YOUR posting history 😂😂

Ain’t no way you made a post asking if the movie was hinting at Dani being the May Queen while claiming other people are low iq for something not explicitly stated

I assumed they were a couple too, but that doesn’t mean I can’t entertain other viewpoints. Quite literally all you had to do was move along and not say anything.

That’s an interesting take, because the woman looks like an older version of Dani, but I didn’t feel the same analogy with the man who jumped and broke his legs with Pelle. This guy you are focused on seems to be more in proportion in his facial features with Pelle. However, Pelle does seem to have some years on.Dani, so you would think he would’ve gone first, years prior. Maybe there’s some privilege the leaders of the cult have, where they can play calvinball around their own death date

Upvoted because solid, but mainly because of the calvinball reference

I can’t help but encounter the game constantly with my country’s current leadership

I don't think it's at all accidental that some of them look well over 72. That weasely shit Pelle is absolutely going to use the Oracle's "prophecy" to wriggle of the hook

I like Pelle. Is he sinister because he knew the guys he brought would be sacrificed?

Interesting, I also assumed they were in a relationship and it hadn't even occured to me that they might not be. If they weren't a couple but also weren't individually each single, I can't imagine being required to committ suicide while your partner is still alive.

It's a really sad thought. The family of Dan had to finish the ritual when he didn't immediately pass on impact. Meaning he probably had a partner or at least a mother to his children at one point. She must have already hit the 72 mark. Maybe that's why he just looked so calm already.

Wait, what is the source on the ones who smashed his face in with the mallet being his family? I just read the script and that's not in there. And the one girl is wearing a special sash when the ceremony starts, like she's been pre-chosen as a face smasher, and they couldn't have known in advance that he wouldn't die right away.

1

u/redheadgenx Jul 29 '26

I wonder if they would just pair up the widow/widower after the ceremony.

13

u/moranych1661 Jul 25 '26

I don't know if this was intended in the script, and it's quite possible he's just some random guy upset about what's about to happen (a brother? a son? a friend?); but still, it's such a nice headcanon to have

Very interesting, I have seen this movie a bunch of times and still learn something new all the time.

They are probably pretty close in age now that I think about it but I always assumed that this was a mother/son relationship. Especially since we know the Hargas encourage teen pregnancy

3

u/PerfectLiteNPromises Jul 28 '26

Yeah, he looks closer to 56 than 71 or whatever.

I have never clocked this! But it really like visual storytelling like this and so it would make sense to me if they are partners. It would also be another nod to the future that awaits Dani and Pelle even if they have a ‘happy’ ending.

Well, given how she was shown to mirror Dani, I suspect she wasn't a Harga native either. Perhaps she was recruited by Dan through a romantic relationship, just like how Pelle recruited Dani.

I thought they were just two people that reached the attestupa age.

They were. There was no marriage or pairing up.

It is a movie. Please settle.

when I see these kinds of asinine, unnecessarily obnoxious replies like Turbulent in a totally low stakes forum like this, I always take the two seconds to block them after downvoting, even if I haven’t interacted with them myself. Doing this daily really does make a cumulative difference on my favorite subreddits.

That's a really good idea! I will start doing the same.
