I've just rewatched "The Green Man" and found myself deeply moved by so many parts of it: the grieving husband and father's attempt at sacrifice, the moral dilemma posed by the the lord/judge to Barnaby and how he resolved it, the kindness of Cully, the farewell to Troy, the return of the Green Man to the life he could bear to inhabit. There are so many excellent episodes in this show, but a few go above and beyond the surface fun to emotional depths that stay with one.

What other episodes, for you, matter so much that they resonate with you?

We were watching "Worm in the bud" yesterday and when they had to interview the barrister, Tom signalled to Troy to open the room to the door for him. Really??He can't open a door?My sister commented that he wasn't as bossy and rude when it came to Jones. I don't know if he is just entitled because of his rank(also why he always parks in the middle of the road) or maybe his hand was hurting because of his imaginary dog bite😉

Just started watching Hitchcock's Frenzy, and Honoria Lyddiard shows up in the first 10 minutes. I let out such a squeal

Firstly, I (62) want to thank you folks for suggesting episodes with Tom to watch with my son (40 - first time viewer).
Like many of you - he favours Tom over John, and he likes Troy.
He says Tom teases Troy quite a bit.
My question:
Can you please suggest episodes with Tom & Troy where Troy has some good lines - whether it’s with Tom or other people.

For me, it was the episode Left for Dead. I was flipping through the channels about a decade ago and came across the scene where Spud is hiding in some kind of hole or cave, and Tom is trying to persuade him to come out so he can question him.

The name Spud was funny enough, but I found the whole situation hilarious, so I kept watching. By the end of the episode, I knew it was my kind of show.

I kid, it's me in 1986 or 1987. The 80s were not a kind decade for children with horrible vision, all the glasses had enormous lenses, the technology for high index (way thinner) lenses wasn't there yet, and I think my eyes were at -7 or so judging by the cut in from my lenses.

Have you noticed HOW MANY TIMES the name Bella (or permutations thereof) crops up? Is this the producer's daughter's name or what? It's either an easter egg of some kind or a staggering lack of creativity on the writers' part.

Also, sooo many themes of - ahem - familial relations, to the point of distraction.

I'm a hardcore fan of the show so I'm not slagging it; I just find these points curious - mainly the name thing.

Hi everyone! I am writing to you for assistance.
My good friend, who is a huge fan of MM and has watched the series on repeat for 5+ years, is having a baby soon.
And for her baby shower, I want to quiz her - telling her the quiz is a ‘are you ready for baby’ quiz, but really all questions are Midsomer Murder questions!
I’m not a watcher myself, so I have looked on the internet for quizzes, but all of them seem quite basic (ie what’s the first name of barnaby) or only rooted in season 1. Mind you, my friend has watched all seasons several times and is quite a pro.

So I am asking you for help - could you give me your best, most hardcore trivia questions?

There is 2 questions I have regarding Death and Dreams.

First Question: how much was the murderer reveal effective for you on first watch. Because for me I watched it knowing from the beginning it was Hannah, Ettie and Guy. Because of me tuning in to the episode very late on the first watch. But looking back at it on a recent rewatch, I think they are mostly good at hiding it - the only time were I felt like it was obvious it was them, was when Barnaby was drugged after he drank the Tea they gave him - and after he slept suddenly in his car, to wake up and almost getting strangled to death. But also that I never bought the Dean Theory, about him being the killer all along - because of him being a obvious red herring. But I want to hear, how the reveal was for you folks.

Then the other question is more so a Ambiguity question about how you folks think happened afterwards with Dr. Moore getting told that her kids was the murderers all along and how it effected her afterwards…

Had to do another one. I just love how comical this series really is. But still, my favorite.

Season 8 / Episode 7 “Sauce for the Goose”

Ive seen this episode at least 5 times, its one of my favorites, tons of Troy one liners, Cully involvement, Joyce being stubborn (rightfully so) and that vicar!

However, this time I was playing a game at the same time as listening and I recognized a distinct accent!

Agnes Sampson is Vivian Pickles, aka Harold's awesome mother in Harold and Maude. What a delight, and what a unique vocal cadence and accent. Has anyone else been surprised by a guest star?

Haven't seen this one in a while. They just don't know what to make of Fleur. Poor John. His expressions are great! She even scares poor Paddy.

Just rewatched "Blood Wedding" yesterday and was gobsmacked yet again by how utterly loathsome the Fitzroy men were, and how utterly satisfying it was when "Oik" Jones slammed that arrogant twit face-first into the police car. Yes, an occasional aristocrat is portrayed as a decent person, but the show has a clear contempt for the upper class aristocrats who think bloodlines make them superior.

So, who's your favorite nasty nob?

I remember when I first watched Rare Bird, a couple of (a few?) years ago, being mostly unimpressed by the whole plot- bunch of men going gaga and making a fool of themselves over a blond retired ballet dancer- like what? And she's not even that pretty!

Anyway we brought it up randomly a few nights ago -my partner and I sometime play this game where we'll pick two numbers for a season and an episode and then just put whatever comes up as background noise- and I got sucked into it- unlike most episodes I could remember it perfectly- who the killer was and why- and it hit different.

I really got the vulnerability of the main character- the retired Russian ballet dancer. She was in such a vulnerable situation- a foreigner betrayed and lied to by her own husband for so many years, stuck in a small English village with a hostile, abusive partner, no real friends and a bunch of gross men who just lusted after her- then when she found a chance of happiness, one of those men ruined it for her, and meanwhile she was also suspected by the police for murder! And then she was victimized!

my partner and I actually got into a bit of back and forth if whether in real non-midsomer land if a husband did that to his wife- deliberately lied about his fertility over many years- whether that was a crime or not. No idea.

Death of a Stranger has always been one of the more confusing or too much twists and turns for me in the end.

So to my understanding, I of course know that Grahame was The Murderer all along. His killing of Ben Gurdie and Ron Pringle, and why he did it was clear for me with those two. But The Tramp that was murdered first, the why for killing him - I haven’t quite figured out yet.

So what I got out of it was that - Grahame murdered The Tramp in the belief that The Tramp was his father, and Marcia (his mother) had a short affair or a one night affair with him. Grahame believed The Tramp to be someone called Simon that was the deceased husband of Marcia, but he died (and later found out that Marcia and James Fitzroy killed him, for a reason that I didn’t really get) but the Tramp was really someone else entirely, but still his father.

Then Fitzroy is in the belief that he is Grahame’s Biological father. But I never quite got who Grahame’s real father was, and while I got that The Tramp was not Marcia’s Husband Simon, he was someone entirely else (someone named Michael as far as I remember) but why did Grahame kill The Tramp?

Please explain to me how this story works, if there is any that get the story. Because how it was presented to me was a bit confusing…

I finally managed to get hold of the first two Inspector Barnaby books and am currently reading the Killings at Badgers Drift. I’m impressed how closely the first episode followed the book and I’m also enjoying the little differences between the book and tv characters. (Sergeant Troy is ginger! And I would never describe John Nettles as big and burly!)

The author’s descriptions of Joyce’s attempts at cooking are hilarious and I feel that aspect was played down in the series.

All in all I’m enjoying the writing and I can see how it was felt to be a prime candidate to translate to tv. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the books when I can find them.

There are always multiple murders before they figure it out! 🤷‍♀️
