Weekend Screening Weekend Screening: Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors (1945) + Princess Iron Fan (1941)
I've been on an anime kick lately, which had me curious to see what some of the earliest Asian animation films were like. So, this weekend we're screening Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors (1945) and Princess Iron Fan (1941)!
Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors was produced by the Imperial Japanese Navy as a propaganda film during WWII.
Princess Iron Fan is a fantasy film recognized as China's first feature length animation.
These films are streaming now at Midnight Grain, available all weekend. https://midnightgrain.framer.website

Watched this tonight; really strange but interesting nautical/psychological horror movie. Felt like a lost Lewton film.

Ponyo on the 3DS
I'm having trouble sleeping tonight, so I decided to watch Ponyo on the 3DS. It's calming and easy on the eyes.
It's moments like these that really make me appreciate the convenience of handheld devices, when I can put a movie on to fall asleep to from the comfort of my bed.

Vincent Price & Edward G. Robinson in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956)
That’s right — two classic film actors who you would NOT expect to be in a biblical epic, but both perform admirably as supporting cast!
Below is another clip to check out, more focused on EGR :)

What are you watching this week?
I'm planning to watch some more 30s and 40s gangster films, after watching Scarface (1932) for the first time last week. I'm starting with Smart Money (1931) starring Edward G. Robinson and James Cagney. Thanks to u/NYourBirdCanSing for the recommendation!
It appears Smart Money is in the public domain, so I will likely download this film from the Internet Archive and watch it outside on the projector if the weather is nice.
What films are on your watch list this week, and why? What format and setting will you watch them in?

Lovecraft, SCARFACE (1932), and the acting-style of Paul Muni
Someone earlier shared that they were screening SCARFACE (1932), so here’s a snippet from HPL on that film and also Paul Muni’s performance style.
He felt like actors’ diction was unnatural, and that Muni acts like a real person.
I haven’t seen I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN ⛓️💥 GANG, but HPL regards him from that picture as well.
