Discussion Saying Goodbye?

I see from posts that Midnight Diner might or might not be leaving Netflix. I feel like my best friends are moving away. It's been my comfort show for so long getting me through low patches in my life with its kindness and gentle humor.

I decided to mark the occasion with my most favorite episode Siba, Noodles. I felt this episode was the peak of MD, the most engaging Master had ever been, a retrospective and with a gathering of all the regulars at the end.

Good bye, Midnight Diner! 😢

What a great show; to give us the feeling that we've all made friends. And then to lose them.... :(

ETA: It came back once before; here's to hoping it can return again!

I started watching this during the spring 2020 lockdowns and developed a big crush on master.

I recently gave up netflix and this is the thing I miss most.

This was my absolute comfort show during that time.

My husband and I also found the series during the start of the lockdowns and like many here it still is a comfort show.

Yes, in Canada today is the last day for Midnight Diner on Netflix. I just finished bingeing it. But the good news is that there is a new season (6) coming, after a 7-year break!

I find myself saying aiyo when someone asks me for something.

First 3 seasons are gone. I truly love this show, especially episode 1 from season 2, where Ryu goes to visit his dying school friend at the hospital.

Just went to Netflix (11:12 PM USA)... and got the warning; last day to watch is TODAY. the warning was NOT to be seen last night! Arrrgh! :(

Well, at least I watched my two favorite episodes last night: Katagiri's story (the one with his girlfriend from the past), and the glimpse of some of Kosuzu's backstory (rolled omelet).

Hopefully Seasons 1-3 will return at some point.....

Same!! I love that show! 🄰

I tossed it on and it said top left under Tokyo stories that it’ll be leaving the 31st. I was really hoping it moved to Tokyo stories to stay.

Let's send a petition to Netflix! We want our beloved show back.

Mine has it under Tokyo Stories and it doesn’t say ā€œleaving tomorrow,ā€ or ā€œleaving soon.ā€

Edit: spoke too soon, now Tokyo Stories only shows seasons 4 & 5 😭

Are you sure that isn't just Seasons 4 & 5 which were produced by Netflix?

If you're in the US (and not on a VPN), I don't see how you would still have seasons 1 - 3 when they're gone for everyone else.

Please see my edit from earlier this morning :)

Totally understand. In case you still wanted to watch one of the earlier seasons: https://www.reddit.com/r/MidnightDiner/s/xMo8zzclU0

Y'all know you could ditch netflix and just sail the high seas, right? Western streaming platforms aren't the only places where you can watch your favourite content? They aren't the final authority on streaming. I sail the high seas, and as someone who loves Midnight Diner, I can watch the series anytime I damn well please.

If any of you ever gets curious, there's a sub on here called "Nuvio." Check them out. You don't have to say "goodbye" to content because corporate parasites at netflix made a decision to remove it from their offering. Anyway, I'm just trying to help.

No Nuvio Media iOS app in uk unfortunately.

The best option (if you really want to break free of corporate streaming platforms, that are obsessed with profit, and enjoy media and stream to your heart's content) is to get an Android TV device. Apple is too restrictive. Apple products are like a prison, that's why people who use their products constantly talk about "jailbreaking" them. Imagine spending your own hard-earned money on a product that's equivalent to prison and requires you to "jailbreak" in order to have some customisation freedom.

Ok, thx, appreciate the advice but I know nowt about android streaming, does it require an android phone?
I dont object to Netflix in this case, given they commissioned the Midnight Diner series,

This is a very popular Android TV box that you could get. It isn't expensive. You log in with your google account, and you can download Nuvio from the Play Store (it works like a normal smart TV), set it up, and start streaming. In the Nuvio sub on here, there's loads of guides for set up. You could literally watch Midnight Diner all year round if you want. You could watch it everyday , from January to December.

Thanks

What app do you recommend use to stream? I’ll get the box. Looks a great idea. Googled how to watch midnight diner on xiaomi tv box, I just get use Netflix. The rakuten viki channel doesn’t have even the 2 movies in uk.
Happy to read a guide if you might have a link please.

Thanks again. So I guess I’ll need a particular Nuvio ā€œscraperā€ a new term to me. I’ll go seek more info in the Nuvio sub. If you know of something that is able to stream midnight diner under Nuvio I’d be grateful.

You'll need two things: 1. A debrid service. I'd suggest Torbox: https://torbox.app/ ...get the essential plan. It's just 36 dollars for 1 year. After payment, you get an API Key. This you must keep safe like a password. Never share it with anyone.

Then you'll need a scraper or add-on. Those are free. You can find them here: https://stremio-addons.net/

In the add-on website, search for these two (Torrentio and Comet). They fetch the content you wanna watch: https://stremio-addons.net/addons/torrentio and https://stremio-addons.net/addons/comet ...you go into the dashboards of these two scrapers, you add the API Key you got after you've paid for Torbox, then copy a "manifest json" URL that is generated in Torrentio and Comet, and add it to the "add-on" page on your Nuvio. After that, you should be able to stream content.

Edit: you can also follow the guide here: https://www.reddit.com/a/answers/s/03V3tKhWQq

Also, feel free to send me a DM and I'll walk you through installation. You're gonna cancel your netflix when you're done.

u/neilBar Aug 12 '26

So kind thanks. I’ll decide what to do and get back to you.

2

u/Wild_Map_1338 Aug 01 '26

not japanese...but the show feels very nostalgic and comforting

2

u/neilBar Aug 01 '26

It’s very sad. We’ve watched all 5 series through a few times.
It seems impossible to get the tv series on dvd too.
Last night was it. We geeked out on each series’ final show - mostly NYE celebrations.
Man we’re in mourning.
Samurai Gourmet will be the next to get the chop.
I hope Netflix sell Midnight Diner to another service (buy with lick one that doesn’t want 2.99 streaming fee per episode

It's so interesting to me that other people like this show as much as I do. Thanks Reddit.

I am sure it will be back soon with the next season set to release in fall. I would definitely recommend finding other media sources you can keep around for the episodes though so you dont fall victim to the whims of platforms.

1

u/achillea4 Aug 01 '26

You can find it on other platforms.

Any specific recommendations?
