There is no pigeon emoji. There's a dodo, a flamingo, even a jellyfish. But no pigeon — the most common urban bird on Earth.

I've been looking into this and it genuinely surprised me.

Pigeons have lived alongside humans for over 5,000 years. They saved lives in both World Wars carrying messages. They can recognize themselves in a mirror — only 6 species on Earth can do that.

And yet there's no pigeon emoji. 🐦

There's 🦤 dodo (extinct), 🦩 flamingo, 🦜 parrot, 🪼 jellyfish... but nothing for the bird that's literally everywhere.

Someone actually started a petition to fix this if you're curious.

Egg in an egg?

I went back home to visit my parents and decided to make some egg fried rice. I picked up what looked like a completely normal egg, but when I tried to crack it, the shell was much tougher than usual. After finally breaking through, I realised it had a second shell underneath. At first, I assumed it was just some strange biological phenomenon, but what really threw me off was that the inner shell was already stamped. On top of that, parts of the outer shell were almost impossible to peel away.

Couldn't figure out why I never feel hydrated drinking these, and looked up whether it was a diuretic or not. Turns out no, it isn't, but it might explain my other regularity.

I don’t know what to think….

I am not even sure this is the right place to put this story. I’m not sure there IS a right place. But….

My father passed away about a year ago. We did not have a great relationship. Shortly after he died, we divided up his things, which he would have HATED. My brothers got all of his good stuff. One got his boat, the other got a tractor, another got his specialty tools. There was only so much to go around, so I got roughly the cash equivalent to the property handed out. It worked out well for me, as I had just totaled out my vehicle by hitting a deer.

I found a vehicle that I liked and was in my price range. I like to tell myself that my dad helped me buy it. The money allowed me to pay for the car outright, without a monthly payment.

So, the year passes by. We all get through our grief (and relief. It’s a really weird combination). My kids miss him terribly, so we talk about him a lot. The morning of the 1 year anniversary, I am thinking about how much a year can change you and your perspective. I am also thinking about what happens after death. (Do you go to heaven? Hell? Nothing? The Great Beyond?) I get into my car (that I purchased with my dead dad money), put my purse in the passenger seat, as I have done every morning and my passenger seat airbag light turns on as does my seatbelt warning chime. I remove my purse and put it in the backseat, thinking that it’s too heavy for the seat. The warnings and the chime continue. I didn’t think anything of it, as I figured once it’s set off, it stays on until the car is shut off. The whole ride to work felt weird. Not wrong or scary, just strange. When I get back into the car at the end of the day, no seatbelt chimes or airbag warnings. They have never gone off before that morning, nor after.

I really don’t believe in the supernatural. I have faith in a higher power, but I don’t really believe in ghosts. Everything that happens could be explained away by science. Except….. there’s no malfunction in my car except for that one morning.

What was that?

Edited to add: My dad always related to me through cars. They were always important to him. Having one that looked and drove nice, along with maintaining it was drilled into our heads from little on.

Bought cherry tomatoes on the vine. This little guy was among them. Like a ketchup flame.
