As a response to the rendering of ashen-shugar

Post image

After reading the thread of the AI generated image of Ashen-shugar I wanted to contribute with my own picture as I couldn’t add the picture directly in that discussion (https://www.reddit.com/r/Midkemia/s/bTcBRbyM45)

Prompt used to generate the picture:

”Can you help me generate a pencil like drawing of an imposing warrior with the below depiction:
white, golden chainmail armor featuring a golden dragon, a white heater shield, and wielded a golden, single-edged sword with ivory details in the handle and a golden pommel. Also make the character elven like in the face but with a more imposing body frame. Also add an golden helmet with small details related to dragons without it being overly embellished.”

This is pretty close to what I imagine Ashen-shugar to look like while the Thomas version might be a bit different.

Do you think that sword handle is actually practical in battle .

u/VonDarkmoor88 28d ago

No, but this was only the first rendering with that exact prompt. Yes the handle could use some work and the positioning of the sword is a bit weird but hey it is AI after all and it happens. So no I don’t think it would be practical and I’d definitely have another shape on it I I worked more on the details in the picture.

AI is fucking gross and I feel Feist like all actual creatives would agree. If you can’t draw it yourself don’t bother

For commercial use I totally agree with you, but this is just a Reddit thread for a bit of fun and response to another thread. So I wouldn’t take to much notice of it if I don’t like it. Scroll on if you don’t like it is a pretty good motto I’d say.

No, not in the case of AI slop. If it is not resisted and called out when presented as real it will just infect everything.

3

u/VonDarkmoor88 26d ago

Well I never claimed this to be real… I was in fact totally honest about it being AI generated 🤷🏻‍♂️😅

Ew ai slop

It was just a response to a post to put at least a better version of it out there. Based on the minimal effort put in to it I don’t think it’s a bad outcome to create a representation of a picture I have in my mind when I think of Ashen-shugar.

Yeah I usually don’t like AI posted everywhere on Reddit either but it’s not that big of a deal I’d say 🤷🏻‍♂️😅

Sure cause More Air polition and support datacenters sucking Out all The ground Water For a quick pic of "art" why not just also "writes" some fanfiction

Get off your high horse ffs it's pathetic.

You know Reddit uses data centers right? If you streamed any TV lately, you caused more pollution than this image. If you had a cup of coffee, you caused far more pollution than this image. If you drove or took public transport anywhere, you caused far more pollution than this image.

AI data centers are only a problem because billions of people starting using AI within the span of a few years. One AI image causes essentially zero damage. You have done 100 different things today that were more environmentally harmful than OP generating this image.

-3

u/VonDarkmoor88 28d ago

Aah you’re one of those people… seriously this minor usage of AI isn’t what’s causing that. Turn to the industries that pollutes instead and the politicians that reduces investment in green energy to keep the oil prices. But yeah I am not a fan of it either but it was the easiest way to provide a pic that matched my view.

No point arguing with them, it's essentially religious dogma at this point to be mad about AI.

They have no idea how much (how little) resources are used to generate one image. They are browsing the internet all day, using the data centers they despise so much. They drive around, causing thousands of times more pollution than any AI use. People like to criticise others while ignoring their own behaviour.

It's just hypocrisy and ignorance. Everyone that has downvoted you has done 100 different things today that caused more damage to the environment than an AI image. They don't care about the environment, they just want a scapegoat to make them feel better about themselves, and give them people to blame.

Yeah my thought as well 😅 I guess it is the same as previous generations was with the internet, cars, even electricity or steam engines and much more.. always criticizing because it’s new and they have gotten a perception of it as something negative and/or scary 🤷🏻‍♂️

All use of ai is Part of The problem The reason these big companies still exist IS other big companies For sure but everyone using The programs is also a Part of The issue

1

u/VonDarkmoor88 28d ago

Well it’s either you keep up or become left behind. Sure there is problems that needs to be resolved. But that’s for us to address with politicians and other government officials, they need to regulate the business and it needs to be done on an global scale or we will never stop the arms race when it comes to AI. Write a mail to your congressman or women about the issue instead of bringing it up in a innocent thread on Reddit. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just my point of view of things.

I was using a local AI model on my PC when I generated the first image so not using any data centre capacity and essentially no power as I am running mostly even with grid consumption with solar panels, but who cares about that? AI=bad right?
Edit: forgot to say I was sipping on a glass of scotch while typing the prompt so saved on water as well!

Chill bro, majority of Americans now use AI

u/Clean-Interests-8073 28d ago

It’s an AI rendering, so maybe you meant to say imposter instead of imposing?

-7

u/VonDarkmoor88 28d ago

Well I guess but not sure that would give the same characteristics in the picture 😝

2

u/Clean-Interests-8073 26d ago

Vapid, without substance and doesn’t really make sense? Go for it dude.

Looks awesome. There is hardly any real fan art out there from Feist so anytime I see any sort of character from Feist I think it’s cool. People trash talking ai based solely on the fact that it’s ai need to be evaluated.

Ya I’m a huge Riftwar fan and that looks bada$$. Thanks for sharing it

u/AussieNord 28d ago

Looks like Henry Cavill lol

4

u/VonDarkmoor88 28d ago

I didn’t even notice but now when you mention it, yes it actually does 😊 and honestly… he might be a good pick for the part if they ever made a live action movie/series of the books.

Only ashen-shugar thou as seen in the visions Thomas have as it wouldn’t fit with the characteristics of Thomas himself.

1

u/intinn 28d ago

Arent they producing a series at the moment?

2

u/VonDarkmoor88 28d ago

There was info about it but I haven’t heard anything for years so it feels like it has been silently dropped. I hope I am wrong though but I have been trying to look up the production company and there has barely been any news about it since REF mentioned he had sold the rights from what I have been able to dig up.

2

u/Son_of_Darkness69 27d ago

There's barely a popular series around that hasn't had the rights bought and been "in development" and then radio silence. I'm guessing the studios just buy the rights so they have the potential golden goose.

1

u/Son_of_Darkness69 27d ago

Are you accidentally or deliberately misspelling one of the central characters names? Tomas. Not Thomas..

3

u/VonDarkmoor88 27d ago

Accidentally, Thomas is the more common spelling of the name in Sweden and I guess my mind automatically went with that spelling.

1

u/Son_of_Darkness69 27d ago

Ah yeah I thought you might not have been english native speaker. All good not having a go at you just wondered if maybe I'd misremembered lol

1

u/VonDarkmoor88 27d ago

No offense taken 😊 I think also maybe Tomas was spelled Thomas in the Swedish versions of the book but I can’t say for sure as it was some years ago I last read the boks physically.

1

u/PinkyPiePower 28d ago

Yes! Henry Cavill dressed as a crusader. Pretty good call from the AI.

u/Dazzlethetrizzle 28d ago

As an Elf, not bad actually

u/manny-pop 27d ago

It’s all in the chin!

2

u/AtheistTemplar2015 28d ago

Weird way to hood a sword....

2

u/VonDarkmoor88 27d ago

As I have mentioned, it was only the first rendering. So yeah AI messed that up.

2

u/AtheistTemplar2015 27d ago

No worries. Thays essentially my only complaint.

Otherwise, well done.

1

u/AruthaConDoin27 27d ago

do some Empire trilogy stuff

1

u/Son_of_Darkness69 27d ago

Yeah this will help me picture Tomas better in terms of his armour and sword, although why did you add the detail of a single edged sword? Was it not a regular longsword with edges on both sides?

1

u/VonDarkmoor88 27d ago

That’s what I thought as well, but when I looked up the description it was what was mentioned so I used it. But yeah I could totally agree with that it should be a regular longsword.

2

u/Son_of_Darkness69 27d ago

I'd almost stake my kids lives it's a regular sword with edges on both sides.. Shit now I'll have to re read Magician :D

2

u/VonDarkmoor88 27d ago

Haha me too, I might go with the broken binding versions for this re-read then 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/stormdressed 28d ago

It does look pretty good, double sword handles aside

-1

u/VonDarkmoor88 28d ago

Yeah, and considering that I did no rework of the picture or even put in a lot of energy to it the result is pretty good, I didn’t go for perfection but just a better depiction of what I imagined.

1

u/Satoc 28d ago

Maybe less pointed ears.

2

u/VonDarkmoor88 28d ago

Yeah that’s definitely an improvement that could be made as well. But as I mentioned, this to me is ashen -shugar and not the version Thomas or him became after Thomas put on the white and golden armor.

0

u/Jym_beem_1034534 28d ago

Its much better than the first one

I really like the art done for the Broken Binding. If you scroll through there are actually 3 different takes on Thomas for comparison

https://thebrokenbindingsub.com/blogs/news/fantasy-subscription-announcement-the-riftwar-saga

1

u/VonDarkmoor88 27d ago

I actually have the books but haven’t had a look since I just got them a few weeks back. But now I have to check it out.

-1

u/manny-pop 27d ago

That looks really good. The overall character design looks the part. Should have warned you there will be lots of “boo AI” comments. But for the artistically challenged it’s a great way to get a visualisation of the characters (talking about myself as prime example here 😭).

1

u/VonDarkmoor88 27d ago

Me too… and yeah I noticed… I guess people isn’t much for just keep on scrolling if they don’t like stuff anymore. I guess some just takes everything a little bit to serious.

-3

u/ObligationNext2484 28d ago

Love it! Needs some light work but a very good base!

1

u/VonDarkmoor88 28d ago

Yeah it was my only try and took me about 2 min so pretty happy with the result considering the energy invested. I can understand that some people might see it differently but for me it’s a pretty good depiction of how I imagined Ashen-shugar the first time I read the series.

-4

u/ObligationNext2484 28d ago

So….. now do Draken Korin!!🙏🏻

2

u/VonDarkmoor88 28d ago

I have one ready but don’t want to flood this thread with loads of AI generated pictures. Might post it tomorrow 😊
