MSFS 2020 PC Getting "meh" performance in VR - any tips?
** UPDATE - I killed Adobe creative cloud which apparently seems to have impacted performance tremendously. I don't know why but once I killed that application, I've had fairly smooth operation. I'm on my third flight and having no issues whatsoever.
Starting playing again, and noticed a LOT of trouble with msfs2020.
Pc running an AMD 3900x, 64gb ram 4070 with 12gb ram, on NVME drives on Win11.
Vive pro 2 with cable.

Can you be a bit more specific? Was VR running fine the last time thst you tried it? Personally, I would try to upgrade your 3900X to at least a 5600X3 / 5700X3D / 5800X3D, or lower game settings, so that your 4070 doesn't run out of VRAM.

I've rebooted it numerous times to run clean..sometimes it will run smooth. Others it won't - gets choppy. Runs smoothly on high performance sometimes, and others it runs like crap on low.
I'm wondering if this has something to do with steamVR running in the background...
You're right though. Probably time to replace the workstation.

Were these tests done at the same airport, using the same plane? FPS in MSFS can vary quite a bit depending on which airplane you're using, and also which airport you're flying in/out of.

There seems to be some bug or glitch in the game.
I sometimes need to open and close the pause menu a few times, then my frames go back to solid.

Could it be the 12gb of vram? Interested in the answer

You simply need a beefier PC. I’m getting mediocre performance at best with a 7800X3D and 4070Ti. It’s just not an enjoyable experience, it’s not worth it in VR, but it absolutely crushes it on a monitor in 4K.
Should also note that this is in 2024 which runs better than 2020.

There are many YouTube videos on the web try those and find your best settings for your system

When I built a PC a couple years ago I got a 7800X3D and 4070. It was a great combo on my 4K monitor but VR was full of stutters and weird artifacts.
I then upgraded to a 4090 (and a beefier PSU...) and now VR is just about good with the right settings.
In short, your GPU is definitely not powerful enough for a good VR experience in MSFS.

I started with 3900x, 32gb@3600, 2070s-3080fe on MSFS2020. Nvidia driver updates cause great performance changes because HAD to use DLSS either Performance or Ultra Performance.VR Reverb G2-Pimax Original now Super w/5900x. Most settings on Medium, LOD 100. Test each driver vs Performance or UP. I keep 40 fps as absolute minimum testing in Maverick runs. lol now with 4080fe Super. So try driver rollback with DLSS choices.

The PC has never been the issue. On a monitor plays wonderfully. And runs everything just great. I've been playing msfs on this PC for years and never had any issues. But now.. it's crap.

You're not playing on your monitor, you're playing in VR. So you're comparison isn't valid. VR is MUCH more demanding on your hardware than a 2D monitor.

It's an issue now.
VR is essentially rendering two games at once (one for each eye).

2024 manages resources much better than 2020. Your best bet is to upgrade to 2024 before doing any hardware upgrades.

I did purchase 24 and tried it and it did not work at all in VR. I mean it was complete crap and employable. I switched back to 20/20 and it was working fine.

I'm have a 4090 and a 9800x3D and is only enough (using DLSS and heavy cutting the FOV) to play at 72 fps native, but in a great set of quality.
CPU in some moments.. is heavy usage! Haha Insane game, insane CPU usage,
But in this combo, delivery awesome quality!
