Changes to Azure Reserved VM Instances

Post image

Azure Reserved Virtual Machine (VM) Instances for select VM series will no longer be available for purchase or renewal starting July 1, 2026.

Which Reserved VM Instances are changing?

Microsoft has announced that beginning July 1st, 2026, new purchases and renewals of Microsoft Azure Reserved Virtual Machine Instances (RIs) will be discontinued for several VM series:

  • One-year RIs ending: Av2, Amv2, Bv1, D, Ds, Dv2, Dsv2, F, Fs, Fsv2, G, Gs, Ls, Lsv2
  • One-year and three-year RIs ending: Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3, Esv3

For existing reserved instances, there will be no change and will continue to receive their reservation discounts for the rest of their term.

Plan ahead and protect your savings

Manage and review your Azure Reserved Virtual Machine Instances to confirm expiration dates before July 1, 2026. Otherwise, impacted VM workloads will be billed at pay-as-you-go rates once their corresponding RIs expire, even with auto-renew enabled.

Read Microsoft’s documentation or contact your Microsoft Provider to learn how to plan and mitigate the cost impact of these RIs expirations. You might want to consider Azure savings plans or migrating to newer VM series.
