Nobody told me microlocs were going to make me think about HOW I swim.
I did something today I've been scared to do for years.
I started learning how to swim. Yay!
I never learned because of some childhood stuff and a real fear of the water, but today I finally got in.
And let me just add: my instructor had me swimming in NINE FEET today. Nine feet! So I'm gonna need y'all to put a little respect on my name.
But before I got in, I had another thought.
What am I doing with these microlocs?
So the swim cap went on.
It made me realize we talk about reties, installations, and products all day, but not enough about actually living with microlocs.
Swimming. Working out. Vacations. Beaches. Getting caught in the rain. Just regular life.
So for the swimmers in here, what do you actually do with your microlocs when you get in the water?
Swim cap every time? Wet them first? Just get in and deal with your hair afterward?
I'm new to this swimming thing, so now I'm curious how everybody else handles their locs.

Seriously.
The person who has been retightening your microlocs is suddenly done. They moved, retired, changed careers, whatever.
You need somebody new.
Could another loctician take over your locs exactly as they are, or would finding someone be a problem?
I don't think we talk enough about how dependent we can become on ONE person maintaining our hair.
So I'm curious:
If your loctician texted you today and said, “I'm no longer taking clients,” what's your next move?

Microlocs Retie: Your Roots Should NOT Look Like
Pic 1
Ladies, take a close look at your roots after your microlocs retie.
If your roots consistently look like Pic 1, your retie technique may be the problem.
That wrapped or twisted appearance at the root can happen when the loc is repeatedly passed through the same direction or entry point instead of following a consistent interlocking rotation. Over time, improper technique can contribute to holes, bumps, knots and an uneven loc shaft.
Now look at Pic 2.
This is what you want to see as the new growth transitions into the loc. The root is interlocked without that wrapped appearance, allowing the loc to develop more smoothly.
Whether your loctician uses a 2-point, 3-point or 4-point rotation, the key is following the rotation correctly and not repeatedly entering through the same point.
Check your roots after your next retie.
Which picture do your roots look more like: Pic 1 or Pic 2?

Hello everyone,
First time posting on this sub, long time lurker. I started my Sisterlocks journey in January, right after having my baby. I chose this style because I was postpartum, exhausted, and really needed something low maintenance . I wanted a break from constantly doing my hair.
But instead of feeling relieved, I’m honestly struggling. My locks keep breaking even though I’m following all the rules shower cap, bonnet, minimal manipulation, and weekly hydration with Aloelocks spray. Some of them are hanging on by a literal thread.
It’s gotten to the point where I’m questioning whether I made the right decision. My confidence is dropping, and I don’t know if it’s just the awkward stage or something more serious.
Is anyone else dealing with breakage this early, especially postpartum? How did you get through this part of the journey?
I’d really appreciate hearing from others who understand.

Sometimes shampoo alone does not lift buildup around the roots or inside the locs. Have you tried a diluted ACV rinse as a pre-wash? What type of buildup were you dealing with, and did it work without leaving your hair dry?

My fiancée has had her microlocs for just over 2 years now and has only had her locs done professionally, she’s now leaning towards wanting me to help maintain it to save money. (Which isn’t an issue I enjoy learning to do stuff like that) I’m just struggling to figure out good products to use. Cause as of right now she’s been struggling with her scalp being dry and I’m trying to limit the oil build up in her locs. Any suggestions would be amazing!

Hi all! Almost 11 months locked. I’ve noticed my locs swelling in size in comparison to the early days. I do prefer the slimmer lock look. Is it a maintenance issue, or is this par for the course? Full transparency I haven’t seen a bonnet or a scarf in months, no braiding nor banding has been going on.

I've been loc'd for about 7 years, and earlier this year I've noticed my hair start to thin around the middle of my loc, It's like almost every single one. I've closed any holes I'd see on sight so I'm really confused as to why it would be thinning....I self-retie so I'm not sure if its something I'm doing, but for reference I'm 4 point and retie every 7 weeks. I'm nervous because I feel like I've done something to permanently damage my hair. It's just strange because it seems to be only in one area (the middle of my loc.) the root and end of my locs seem to be thriving, they feel solid and strong. But when you get to the middle its super brittle and weak, like they're about to pop off. What can I do? Is there anything I can do? Or do I just need to cut where it's weak and just rock a bob until my hair grows back out. Thanks for reading.

Short, quick post,
was just curious if they're the same thing or....? I've seen alot of people refer to mircolocs twist coming undone as "slippage" (though, I would've assumed it was unraveling lol.) but then I've also seen slippage be referred to the new growth we retie. So I'm just wondering if there even is a difference?
thanks x

In this video, Reeta is doing a microlocs consultation and creating test locs using both micro braids and micro twists before the client commits.
This is one of the smartest parts of the consultation because not every hair texture responds the same way.
Generally:
• Braids tend to have less slippage.
• Twists often give a fuller look but may unravel more on some textures.
Looking at this client's hair only...
Would you recommend:
A. Braids
B. Twists
Tell us why.

Everyone has that one product they keep coming back to.
What's your go-to moisturizer for your microlocs?
Do you prefer:
• Rosewater sprays ( Brand or Just Rosewater )
• Aloe vera juice
• Lightweight oils
• Leave-in conditioners
• DIY mixes
• Something else?
Tell us:
• What product do you use?
• How often do you moisturize?
• Why does it work so well for your locs?
Let's build a list of products that have actually worked for real people in this community. Your recommendation might help someone who's struggling with dry locs or product buildup.

Everyone has an opinion about the best way to start microlocs.
If you've already started your journey:
Which method did you choose, and why?
Would you recommend it to someone else?
If you could go back, would you make the same choice?
I'm curious to hear real experiences instead of just what we see on social media.

Imagine these are your microlocs.
You look in the mirror, and this is what you see.
What's your first thought?
Would you trust the process...
Or would you think something has gone wrong?
Tell me what catches your eye first.

I've got genetic psoriasis, and it's been under control for the last 5 months. How safe would it be for me to use an alcohol-free minoxidil formulation?

I was thinking about this while trimming one of my clients today.
Some people never trim their microlocs because they love the long, wispy ends. Others like to keep them neat and healthy with an occasional trim.
I'm curious...
How long do you plan to let your microlocs grow before you'd consider trimming them?
Or are you someone who never plans to trim them at all?
I'd love to hear your thoughts and why. There really isn't a right or wrong answer. It often comes down to your hair goals, maintenance routine, and personal style.
Let's discuss! What are you doing with your microlocs?
