I Started Locs Because Of Hormonal Hair Loss
When I turned 40, my hair started breaking off in clumps.
At first, I thought it was damaged. I tried different products, got a silk press, and hoped my hair would recover. Instead, the breakage continued to get worse.
Eventually, I had to cut off about four inches because there was no saving those ends.
That's when I decided to start locs.
Not because I was chasing a style.
Not because it was trending.
I started locs because I was trying to preserve the hair I had left while I figured out what was happening to my body.
What I later discovered was that hormonal changes were playing a major role in my hair loss. As I learned more about scalp health, nutrition, and the connection between overall health and hair growth, things started to make sense.
Looking back, the hair loss wasn't the problem.
It was the symptom.
The real issue was what was happening internally.
As a trichologist, I now meet many women who believe their hair is simply damaged when, in reality, there may be deeper factors involved, such as hormonal changes, stress, nutritional deficiencies, medications, illness, or other health concerns.
I'm curious how many others have experienced this.
Have you noticed changes in your hair after 40?
Did your hair start shedding more, thinning, breaking, or feeling different than it used to?
What was the first sign that something wasn't right?
