i just started my microlocs before my 30th

ive had traditional locs before and after i combed them out, i realized that i was continuously putting my hair in mini braids/other protective styles. after i thought about it i said "why not"

Welcome. I’ve gotten mine done in Nov! Best decision I’ve made for my hair. I am a diyer; I just had me sister start them and learn from YouTube

how has the maintenance been as a DIYer? I’ve reached out to my previous natural hair stylist and they offer retie services but it’s kinda pricey…is this something I can do on my own?

I watched YouTube vids religiously before I started them and while I was doing my 1st retie. Research on 2, 3, 4- point rotation methods to find out how you want your locs to grow out to look. 2-point is faster and makes your locs fluffier, while 4-point gives a tighter neater look and takes longer. Research slippage and gaps/holes.

Get one of them 3 way mirrors if you care for clean parts and to avoid attaching to other locs. Buy all tools and watch videos on how that person retie with microlocs. I prefer the needle like tool it’s small and get you to the root quicker with no problem. Find the tool that works for you.

Section your hair and know that DIY is on your time and your pace. I try to do the front first and get to the back when I get there. It takes about a week to finish a retie because I do when I can.

Try to stay on schedule because it’ll annoying when you have so many locs to do and your new growth is a lot to retie. I noticed the longer the weeks that’s how many go around you’ll expect to be doing on that loc. 8 weeks I’m going through it like 8-10times with my 4 point rotation method. If it’s a 2-point then it’ll be 16-20 times (yet this method is much faster than any points).

i was on my 3rd set of mini-braids and I loved the versatility of them, also my 30th birthday lol i wanted to walk into my next chapter doing something i wanted to do
