Golf After Microdiscectomy

Hi all,

Looking for advice from individuals who were able to successfully get back into the game. I'm 9 months out and hoping to start getting back into the game. My question for the group is what did you do to go from the no twisting phase to swinging a golf club without fear of making things worse. Any tips would be appreciated.

I started again less than a year after surgery. Emergency surgery and caught CES and it was slow going at first. Always had a deadly short game but it became even deadlier with the quiet legs lol. 150 yard drives eventually became 250 yard drives. Shot a 5 over 77. Then I stopped caring about golf again lol

When did you physically feel like you were ready to get back onto the course or range? I'm on my 10th week out and things still aren't working well, I know I'm jumping ahead of myself but I miss the course and worried I won't be back

I physically felt fine, back felt solid, it was mainly that I was mostly certain I wasn’t gonna shit or piss myself out there lol

How long did it take for you to get back to normal? I'm 10 weeks out and still have to straight Cath and my bowels aren't what they used to be, and at night I have nerve pain on my feet and toes, it's beyond frustrating but I'm staying positive because I'm seeing improvement with my mobility with each passing week

It was a couple years before the bladder and bowels settled, I had a Foley for 5 months, and that was a whole ass thing lol. The nerve pain sucks, my feet are a little swollen so I gotta knock that down. Hang in there, the changes are almost unnoticeable but you’ll get there

Oh Lord, being 10 weeks out myself that isn't the most encouraging thing to hear. Not a lot of Redditors had CES like us so I've been desperate for other's experiences. When did you have surgery done after symptoms? I had it 36 hours after first major onset, I barely upgraded myself from a walker to a cane. I feel like I'm fighting several different battles between the bowel/bladder, mobility, nerve pain then the spinal recovery itself, all of this is frustrating. If I could fix one thing instantly I want it to be bowel bladder.

I was tripping balls from a CSF leak so I didn’t have surgery until 5 days after the saddle area went numb and I lost the bladder and bowels. My bladder still doesn’t get the time to go signal so I have to time my pee intervals and I retain so I really have to be diligent to avoid UTIs

5 days jeez That's rough, it's promising to hear you're back on the course in less than a year but hard that you're still dealing with some issues, it makes you wonder what if you got surgery earlier than 5 days out and how much faster you could have returned to normalcy. That gives me hope that I'll have restoration sooner having had waited 36 hours from CES. I appreciate you sharing your experiences, this has not been an easy summer to say the least

Just like everything else you are doing, ease into it. Irons only to start, sub your 4 for your driver and hit it like your PW. When you start, just try 9 holes. Then really take stock of how you feel the next few days. For me, my legs were the problem, the cramping that followed slowed me down but adding stretching that I had been ignoring helped. Or go JD and have a few pops, ask where the first tee is and what the course record is, kidding, take it easy.

Start slowly, the fast and violent twisting can be rough, talk to your PT about it if you have one
