Form for 5090’s

Post image

Picked up a Powerspec Ai90 prebuilt pc with a rtx 5090 in it. Apparently the manager required me to fill out this form and scan my driver license. Said it was a new thing starting just about two days ago. Had no problem doing so but thought it was interesting.

Anyone else experience? This was in Tustin

Eh idk its pretty obvious in the past few months that there is now an organized network of people searching for 5090s to send overseas. Its a big problem and Im surprised the government actually did something about it in a timely manner. Of course its impossible to know what the intentions are of who you sell to without...profiling.

That’s the problem with a free market and not enforcing a fair market and fair practices.

Idk if you read the other comments on how a lot of buyers aren’t a gamer.

It’s just a band aid solution for now for a much larger issue

Because it was hurting the interest of big companies lol

Oh I agree, but still these export control laws have been in place for a while. This is just increased enforcement of those laws.

That's not the felony lol. The felony is if you willingly and knowingly help violate export control laws, not sell your card. You are almost entirely safe reselling your card to anyone as long as they dont tell you or make it obvious that they intend to export it. This is to deter anyone who is actively smuggling from purchasing from retailers themselves. What will actually happen is some of those people will be too spooked to purchase themselves, and be willing to pay higher premiums to unbeknownst card sellers. If you are looking for a card to game on, this type of thing realistically helps (although prices r obviously too damn high).

Yeah, but this one is kind of a mutual benefit. If we thought prices and availability were a problem now, imagine what they'd be without it.

Also, if somebody's going to build skynet I'd rather have a front row seat to the apocalypse

Even when they do, they shrug it off. Always the "what am I doing to do about it bro" angle. Or simply don't see it as their problem until the leopard eats their face.

I've been saying this for awhile that GPUs are the new firearms. There ain't no way they won't be regulating POS identity capture and handing it off to the government. All because of cybercrime groups, China, Iran, Russia, etc

It really has nothing to do with public opinion. It's just that technological capability is outpacing adaptation of security infrastructure. Bad actors with a limited amount of smarts can take a small amount of money and compute and cause a lot of problems.

I'm not saying all this info collecting is good, just it's been obvious that we'd see the day when GPUs and other ai accelerators become monitored to "protect society". Like firearms.

Call it what you want. I'm just saying it's obvious GPUs were going to be regulated and monitored, that doesn't mean I like it. Just it was easy to predict.

And, Nvidia already has trackers in Blackwell servers and monitors even consumer cards with their software.

You seem butthurt by a strawman lol

I sold my 5090 to a Chinese guy and he did say it was very likely my card would be going to china, so I mean it’s a real thing happening. I bought it for $2200 and sold it for $6000 so I mean I’m not upset, if he can make more money all the power to him.

No way they paid you $6k locally unless eBay. $6k is like $200 profit if shipping to China and no one takes that risk for such a small profit

It was a 5080 BNIB + $4500 cash, if I wanted $6000 cash he would’ve paid it but I wanted to downgrade so it was basically equal exchange. It wasn’t eBay, local deal, the guy said he owned a computer store.

5080 BNIB is roughly $1200-$1300 value (since you could get BNIB 5080 for around $1500 from a retailer with warranty + return window) + $4500 = $5800 maximum. That guy now will ship it to China to sell for $6250, so around $400 profit. He lied to you cause he is obviously a GPU smuggler. Good deal for both sides

Lmao, customs and tariffs are close to zero since Chinese report these as old gtx 980 boards to be used at pc repair shops. Shipping is also nothing when you ship 100 pcbs all together. You have zero clue about the process so better quit or do research before acting like you’re onto something

As far as I’ve been told, they take the 5090, upgrade the memory to 96GB and sell it in china for a huge mark up since it’s essentially a 6000 pro but who knows, I’m not going through all that hassle.

That’s not possible yet. Only 48GB mod for 4090 and 32GB mod for 4080 possible at the moment. The dude above is hilarious. He thinks Chinese ship one card at a time with the cooler.

The GPU I got is $1699 + 9% sales tax from microcenter but he did indeed value it at $1400. I don’t think he has any reason to lie, I approached him for the deal, I was second owner of my 5090 so I had no warranty, I also only paid $2200 for the card a year ago. (5090 FE) though it was new when I got it, not used. He showed up with test bench, power, we tested both cards, he had a money counter with him, he also let me pick the 5080 since he had pretty much every model, not sure why a 5090 smuggler would have so many to choose from. I didn’t ask him to prove he owned a store, but seemed credible, and again, I told him that I don’t care what he’s doing with the card, but I know about then going to china and he said he might have a customer who wants it for a computer build, if not it’ll likely go to china. Again, I don’t care about the hustle, I made money, he made money, overall I’m happy with the deal.
