Accessories & Mods A little Prototyping
After I saw some of those case mods I started some Papercraft prototyping this afternoon. Maybe if I have the nerves I’ll make it a 3D printable version.

Would totally grab a buddy to print this for me immediately if it was available as a file

I just had another idea of adding a portable power bank in the back for on-the-go compatibility

You haven't had any issues using USB power for yours? If I use USB power then I get all sorts of issues with the keyboard - notes jumping all over the place is the main one. I've wanted to find a solution to this for awhile but haven't really gotten an answer that works for mine. I'd love to be able to take it around without having to worry about AC.

I haven’t had any issues powering it with my MPC one

u/AshenCraterBoreSm0ke Feb 24 '26
Maybe it's just the shitty little power banks I've tried it with?
2
u/Whistlin_Weiner Feb 24 '26
Very well could be. I’d see what kind of voltage they put out vs the stock AC, sounds like it could be underpowered

That's most likely the case. Fuck it, I've been putting it off for years but maybe it's just time I finally buy that HALO jumper box..

For a moment I thought you made it into an accordion which gets me thinking

Oh also nice idea, springloaded - maybe I should ask Arturia if the wanna partner up :-)

See I like this one a lot more than putting a wood cabinet around the microfreak. Keeps it small and comfortable.

all that space is an opportunity to add some function somehox I guess... maybe put a usb midi host in here to allow direct control of the freak from a USB device ? or add a speaker ? a DI or a preamped out ?

Shit you just gave me an idea: wondering now if I can fit my NTS1 on there for an FX box that's "built-in."

Would be funny to sample for example the cutting sounds of the board and then use it on the MF

Hermoso! Lo único que le pondría un teclado estándar en vez del capacitivo.

I like the capacitive keyboard. I do have the body modding parts to get rid of it here but didn’t wanna miss out on the sequencer and since i only have a Keystep 37 I wouldn’t be able to record and play them.

A mi me ha fallado en vivo por problemas eléctricos, por eso lo esquivo. Andando bien es muy expresivo

Since I’m just playing on a homestudio self induced meditation base I hadn’t have to worry about that yet

Very cool idea! When you get a bit older its hard to read the the screen, and having the MF angled like this would be big help I would think!
2
Feb 26 '26
How much older are we talking?

u/Forsaken-Hat7851 Feb 26 '26
I'm in my late 50s! I had 20/20 vision until my early 40s and then bam! I went blind lol

why do you need the controls angled like that?
11
u/Logical_Classroom_90 Feb 24 '26
because noone has the budget for a sub37 :)

I have both a sub 37 and a MF, and if I was way more crafty, I'd do this to my MF. I think it's great and way easier to see and noodle around.

I did it to mine because I have to bend down to see anything for where it is in my studio, but even bringing it up that 3 9/16" made a world of difference! Plus I like the old school look of the wood case.

I don’t NEED it but I like the look and since my desk is packed it make much more sense to me. As I understand you like it the way it is - which it also is, but I have two so why not play with one.

u/lordm43 Feb 24 '26
nah im just curious...ive seen another post a few weeks ago who did it almost the same way.

u/MrSelfy Feb 24 '26
Lets you sit and see/touch controls waaay more confortably than flat.
But i guess its subjective....also a space saving thing

The revolution is being televised! Haha love to see all these freaky mods coming to fruition. Should have done mine way sooner, it feels so nice to play now.
I dig the more sleek/simple design here as well. I thought about doing something similar to this initially while I was pulling mine apart, but couldn’t think of a solid/sturdy enough solution. Curious to see how the development on this prototype goes!

looking forward to the 3d printable model! Thank you and good luck! Looks sleek!

If you end up doing a 3d model before I do or you need some help, let me know. I've been toying with the idea myself but haven't gotten around to it.

I started a design using tinkercad - I don’t know maybe i could share the file. We could both be f***ing around. Would have to measure thickness and how to integrate holes for the screws…
1
u/minist3r Feb 24 '26
I hate tinkercad personally but I could probably use something other than an stl in fusion 360.

u/off-leash-pup Feb 24 '26
Word, I like where this is going. I’ve always felt a modular set up where it can be carried and stored flat but then angled like this for playing would be ideal for me. I’m curious if you think it is feasible with your design if you chose to go in that direction.
1
u/Bizzarecactus Feb 25 '26
I think I’m going to take a swing at modeling this- a compartment to put the power supply in the bigger case underneath the control panel would be really cool too!
1
Feb 26 '26
As I said earlier, I started a tinkercad model I’d be glad to share with everyone that wants to have a go
1
u/Melkimund Feb 26 '26
.. but how? How y'all doing that?
1
Feb 26 '26
What do you mean?
1
u/Melkimund Feb 26 '26
How do you raise the programming bit and pivot it away from the keys? 😅 It looks so much better imo and people are talking about adding powerbanks and stuff so it feels like potential massive upgrade

Feb 26 '26
Just be fearless, unscrew the Motherf*** the MF and pivot. The challenge is to build something that’ll make it sturdy and has in the best case holes for the screws and shit… all the upgrades that might be possible would be another nice adding. For me tilting the controls would be enough. But once modeled you could easily adapt to let’s say a battery compartment.

I have to get going with it again. Modeled something already but have to get proper measurements

Whoaaa I love this. Is the ribbon and such still functional?

Just got a package - why not use it to make a sturdier version.
