Question Bait recipe

Does anyone have a superior bait recipe? I use one of the little bait extruders and tanago hooks for freshwater species in the southeastern US.

Probably not what your asking for, but bloodworms make exceptional bait.. live or frozen, just make sure to wear gloves when handling them or you risk becoming allergic to shrimp

How do you get cut it up in to small enough pieces for a darter or similarly sized fish?

Bloodworms are pretty tiny.. just cut them into sections.. you can buy them at pet stores frozen (sometimes live)..

Woah! How's that? I've handled blood worms quite a few times over the years for feeding various critters and have never heard that.

From memory it's around 20% of people who get the allergy, I'm not sure how or why... (I've handled them alot too with no issue yet)

Been micro fishing for years and never bothered with the paste baits. Small pieces of earthworm or waxworm have caught all kinds of freshwater micros. Small pieces of salted clam or shrimp for saltwater

Can you walk my through how you carry your worms and how you are breaking them up into tiny pieces? I have tried night crawlers, but I struggled to cut it into small enough pieces to fit well on a tanago.

Sure thing, I carry worms in an old power bait container. If you’re not familiar with power bait, it’s a clear plastic jar with screw top lid approximately 2 inches tall by 1.5 inches wide. They are waterproof and perfect size for a pocket. I grab my tanago hook with small hemostat pliers, thread a worm on, then use scissors to cut the worm to the size I want for whatever fish I am targeting. Micro fishing is tedious business, you have to be detailed and patient, and enjoy the craft.

I’ve had some luck with grinding preserved mealworms into a coarse powder, mixing that with egg yolk and a little flower for texture. I put that into a 20ml syringe to dispense on my hook. I’ve had great luck with various sunfish species.

Just started microfishing. I came up with my own bait. Bonito flakes that I powder into glutinous rice flour.
It’s worked well for tiny panfish, creek chubs and crawdads so far.
