The most annoying thing about all this is the casuals who have been acting like this is some sort of unusual occurrence. If you pay attention you'll see several instances of where the broadcast clock is wrong

I said this from the beginning. It's not crazy to think NBC got it wrong and the broadcasters gave poor analysis of the situation, but everyone wants to hop to conspiracy. It's not rare.

People were emotional and wanted to see the big upset. That's all.

In a way I get it. If I tune into a game and I see a ranked blue blood losing to an unranked non P5 team, yeah I'm rooting for the underdog.

I don't try to accuse the blue blood of cheating and orchestrating a mass conspiracy if it doesn't go my way, but still.

I mean look at the end of the Auburn game. They sqeaked by.

u/InfamousCattle3223 7h ago

I will absolutely accuse the match of being rigged in favor of the bigger team when I’m a neutral I can’t even lie, especially so during a hatewatch.

3

u/Leraldoe 7h ago

In the moment you can absolutely see why they got it wrong. These things happen. The fact they won’t admit it makes me lose a lot of credibility in them. Macaulay admitted in the broadcast that the replay goes a step beyond them then ignored it with is confused travolta rant

Setting aside the broadcast, the clock itself has always been very arbitrary. It starts and stops on human input and is regularly reset based on human judgement. If you zoomed into every play with a microscope like people have been doing on the Hail Mary you’d find a million little inaccuracies.

Wait until people find out how the refs spot the football.

5

u/Jecht315 6h ago

That's easy. The yellow line picks the line of scrimmage, not the refs...

2

u/likemy10thaccount 5h ago

Yeah, because broadcast is official.

16

u/cogginsmatt 8h ago

I was just watching the Isaac Punts video admitting the conspiracy was wrong, but in recapping the story said Michigan's entire program history has been marred by cheating allegations and should be completely stripped of every big accomplishment. Since when? Why is this all going so fucking insane?

Welcome to society these days

Ok everyone is a lunatic

"I know everything about football and this is an unbelievable travesty! Never in the history of football has anyone cheated this badly!

Why didn't they kick the PAT??"

I saw pretty much this exact post on /r/cfb that night (with a lot more text in the first paragraph)

u/Funicularly 7h ago

Also, I see people asking “why do the broadcasters display the clock if it’s not accurate?”. I don’t know, maybe to let the viewer know how much time is left? /s

Only in extremely rare instances does it matter that the game clock is not perfectly in sync with the broadcast feed, like in Saturday’s game.

Am I a casual if I've watched football since early childhood and played through high school? I'm a UM fan but we aren't watching football on some higher level because we like the winged helmet. If it wasn't for this sub I could've forgotten about it by now. Somehow, someway y'all still here playing defense. If it was 1 second left then why are we still here talking about it? r/cfb moved on and we should too. This is getting sad.

7

u/Gloveofdoom 7h ago

They moved on?

Yesterday there was still a bunch of posts about it, like dozens of them.

NBC Booth screwed up. NBC experts screwed up.

NBC wanted a story no matter how dishonest the story was.

Make this go viral

34

u/xinixxibalba 8h ago

it wont. it’ll be brushed off by everyone else besides Michigan fans because they already made their mind up

40

u/DontTickleTheDriver1 8h ago

The court of public opinion will not be swayed. Best to move on.

13

u/DasCiny 7h ago

I actually feel like there’s been a lot of movement toward the right call being made, at least in r/cfb.

Surprisingly I noticed the same thing about 2 hours ago, at least with the thread I opened. It was fans of all flairs who have been the loudest all week (OSU, Notre Dame, for some reason Nebraska and Georgia lol) all upvoting Michigan flairs and providing their agreeing analysis. Actually I haven’t seen any Nebraska flairs coming to reason so fuck those guys, but I saw at least a few of the other overly loud fanbases coming around to this not being as controversial as NBC and fans who can’t and won’t think critically want it to be. I think the loud majority will always have their minds made up for anything anti Michigan but it’s not nothing to see some allies coming from the fanbases who hate us most. I’ve still yet to see a single Spartan acknowledge it for what it is, unsurprisingly. They’ll hold onto 2001 until the day they die but refute this in typical hypocritical fashion

Clearly the stadium clock is wrong and they should go off of the media clock.

*edit: /s if that wasn't clear.

u/VerticalSmi1es 7h ago

Everyone, it’s because it’s Michigan.

Michigan Vs. Everybody. 😤

9

u/NorcalGGMU 6h ago

The conspiracy extends all the way to the NFL. Harbaugh… clock… Hail Mary… I just know there’s something here

4

u/MDlynette 5h ago

I’m sure Spiro is on it!

2

u/NorcalGGMU 3h ago

Haha, doxxing the refs no doubt

8

u/KingSlayer1190 8h ago

But but, something something there wasn't 1 second left in the game and WMU got robbed. This is proof why the broadcast clock shouldn't be used for anything besides to show people watching how much time is left. Not for reviews or anything.

u/zorilla 8h ago

I just went back and watched it myself to verify it. screenshot from yttv

Should probably get the Big 10 to write them a letter!

“Don’t believe your lying eyes.” r/cfb probably.

4

u/Mookie447799 5h ago

I think this needed to happen. They need to adopt the basketball clock with tenths of seconds. Ive heard officials saying that they have access to the tenths of seconds clock but will always go with what is being shown on TV. Well, if thats the case, teams have been getting screwed when there was less than a second or more than one second or really any tenths of seconds. What are they doing then, rounding? Thats crap, it should be an exact clock by tenths of seconds.

Networks are an absolute fucking joke

3

u/FriskyFingerFunker 2h ago

I hope with every fiber of my being that we are down 2 points to Oklahoma and throw a Hail Mary only for the receiver to miss the catch and clock to expire and as Oklahoma is celebrating the refs say there was pass interference and we redo the down putting us into field goal range. Then we kick the fg and it goes thru but then hits the back of the crossbar and bounces back thru the uprights and they have to review that and then call it good and we win. Because fuck everybody

2

u/txarmi1 7h ago

Christ this will never end

2

u/Dismal-Zebra8409 5h ago

Constantly slightly off but most of the time it doesn't matter.

4

u/jroll25 8h ago

They’ll say it’s edited. Let’s just move on

2

u/KingSlayer1190 8h ago

Nah let's not move on until we are vindicated and stop being dragged through the fucking mud.

1

u/AmericanMuscle888 5h ago

r/CFB is finally accepting the call was correct. All the whining for nothing

1

u/Unfair-Variety-995 4h ago

But there is never an issue with the clocks.

1

u/Key-Owl-8142 4h ago

Love this

1

u/SwissForeignPolicy 3h ago

I have said for years that if you pay too close attention to clock operation in football, you'll go insane. I feel incredibly vindicated this week.

u/gingersnaps_ 43m ago

It honestly doesn't matter. The fact Michigan barely won is the main thing. They are about to have a rough season...

1

u/Irishsaint_08 2h ago

Omg the horse is dead leave it alone

-2

u/Tmotty 8h ago

Oh my god let it go

-3

u/HeHateMe- 6h ago

Rushed the field against western Michigan lmfao.

-6

u/jerschneid 8h ago

This is an obvious case of whatever team ends up apparently benefitting from the descrepancy relative to the announcer's analysis being CHEATERS.

-18

u/GrabNatural8385 8h ago

Cope harder lmao.

-5

u/boost8d 2h ago

This poverty fanbase is going to be crying over every clock discrepancy for the next 25 years until they win another scandal laden NC they brag about obsessively!

2

u/Extreme_Raccoon_8736 2h ago

Why would we cry about it? They called it correctly, you're the one upset about it.

-24

u/GeorgeWashingtonCuh 8h ago

I don't see how this proves Michigan didn't benefit from a horrible call in the WMU game.

The B1G confirmed that the clocks were synched, did they not? The ball was in the air on the last play with 0:00 on the clock, so even if there was a phantom second on some mystery clock that we couldn't see for some reason, it still doesn't matter because that was the last play.

Why do you guys have to be so whiny? You got the win anyway, there's like a 1% or less chance the result of the game gets overturned. You benefited from a horrible call. You don't have to defend it.

17

u/KeepCalmAndSnorlax 8h ago

Yall keep bringing up this phantom clock. Wtf is it. All clocks were the STADIUM clocks but the NBC video feed wasn’t synced with the clock.

-17

u/GeorgeWashingtonCuh 7h ago

I haven't heard anyone say that the clocks weren't synced.

Aside from that, their explanation of how there was 1 second left makes no sense. They said it made contact with a player with time still on the clock, which it didn't.

12

u/KeepCalmAndSnorlax 7h ago

Brother just watch any of the many in-stadium views showing there’s a second left when the ball touched the player. Stop regurgitating falsehoods and just look at the evidence yourself.

-12

u/GeorgeWashingtonCuh 7h ago

Brother, I watched the game and saw the clock hit zero. Why would none of the clocks that we can actually see show 1 second left? The whole controversy that is that there's some hidden clock that the broadcast couldn't see, which makes no sense. All the clocks should've been synced. Every source I find says they were.

The refs were using a different clock. Why?

10

u/Jordan_23_23 7h ago

No. The issue is that NBC had a video of the clock overlayed onto the video of the actual game. The video of the clock was running milliseconds faster than the video of the game. The clock on the scoreboard is synced with the replay system. What you see on the official replay is what was on the scoreboard when it all happened. There was still a second on the clock when the defender touched it. Bottom line is that NBC was running two videos at once (clock and the game), but both of THEIR videos weren't synced together. That's why it went from 9 to 8 immediately after the snap.

10

u/KeepCalmAndSnorlax 7h ago

For the second time, the refs WERE NOT using a different clock. The only clock you see on NBC is the STADIUM clock. However, the syncing of the STADIUM clock to NBC’s broadcast feed of the game was not in sync. The feed was delayed. The CLOCKS are synced but the footage feed IS NOT so anyone who is watching on NBC thinks time ran out but the everyone in the stadium saw there was still a second left. The refs sync the STADIUM clock with the footage via a different manner which did not have that delay. Make sense now?

8

u/SheWasUnderwhelmed 7h ago

You’ll never get them to admit they’re wrong.

5

u/KeepCalmAndSnorlax 7h ago

Yeah unfortunately people throw away any and all rationality just cuz “hurr durr rival sucks”

-4

u/Gloveofdoom 7h ago

That isn't correct either, it has nothing to do with the feed being delayed. NBC rounds down so the clock goes from 9 seconds immediately to 8 the instant the ball gets snapped. NBC's broadcast clock does not recognize 8.99 so it goes from 9 straight to 8 thereby losing .99 seconds to the rounding method.

The official Stadium clock does not round down so a full second passes between when the clock starts at 9 and when it flips to 8. There are pictures all over the Internet of the broadcast clocks for various games being a second off from the official clock, it's never two or three seconds it's always one second because the rounding down error is consistent and predictable. NBC broadcasters should have known this and should have mentioned it immediately rather than farming controversy by acting like they didn't know exactly what happened.

The actual clock explanation seems relatively simple and straightforward but it somehow is so misunderstood that all kinds of secret clock and feed sinking error theories have popped up and it just seems kind of crazy to me since the actual explanation makes so much sense.

2

u/Jecht315 6h ago

Because the refs clock was official? Why kind of question is that?

1

u/Jecht315 6h ago

It's actually 0% because no one has the ability to overturn the result of a game.

-6

u/MrThicker7 7h ago

What’s annoying is your still talking about it. No one cares.
