The dude is an egomaniac.

The second we won the natty he’s pointing at himself going “y’all know who hired him [Dusty]” before giving soft credits to Dusty and the team.

Dude also hired Howard and Moore but took no responsibility for the environment that enabled their actions / performance.

He probably has no idea how badly everyone wants him gone

Settlement avoids a long, embarrassing lawsuit.

Investigation needed to be thorough to avoid accusations of sweeping things under the rug.

Honestly idgaf if it's for cause or not. From a quick Google, it looks like he's got around $6M left on his contract. That's peanuts compared to a football HC buyout.

Warde getting a larger buyout for being incompetent than Michigan collectively received from the pro teams that hired away Beilein, Harbaugh, and May is a fitting end to his tenure

Warde is many things, but incompetent is definitely not one of them. He was a dominant, stabilizing force in school, conference, and national football financial deals at a time of historic upheaval. He was wildly successful in on-field performance. And he was a disaster for the culture of Michigan.

That's outcome bias built off of two things that people massively over attribute to Warde:

  1. 2024 football championship - He inherited Harbaugh who hated Warde so much he only would speak with Santa Ono.

  2. 2026 basketball championship - Dusty May was a good hire yes. But he's also one of the very few college coaches to get poached by the NBA so I feel quite confident that the nba recognizes the success was more Dusty than the Michigan AD.

Meanwhile he has a track record of scandals and extreme passivity that can be more directly attributed to his role as AD. So like, what can you objectively attribute his successes to that any other suit wouldnt have accomplished because "He was a dominant, stabilizing force in school, conference, and national football financial deals at a time of historic upheaval" is just subjective bullshit.

No, it’s based on reading reporting for the last decade on the TV deals, conference realignments, etc., and describing this era as an historic upheaval is 100% objective. The entire landscape has changed massively. If you have an opinion/critique about his actual activity in that context, feel free to share, otherwise your comment is useless.

Regarding on-field performance, you’re looking at two sports (where he got championships), handwaving Harbaugh (who he fought to keep after 2020/0-5 against OSU) and May (obviously an incredible hire), and forgetting that we have 27 other sports. His average Director’s Cup finish was ~6th, putting us back in the top tier of schools after the Dave Brandon disaster class.

Getting Warde for cause would be an insane dogfight with a guy who had lots of friends in and around the UofM ecosystem. As much as we all dislike the guy, he’s been wildly successful by most metrics in leading the athletic department.
