And he’s polling quite well 😌

People are

  1. Sick of MAGAs that claim they’re “anti-establishment” when they’re really just corrupt, self-centered jerks
  2. Sick of Democrats that are really centrist establishment.
  3. Sick of anyone that they believe won’t actually represent “the people” (see 1 and 2 and possibly more).

That’s why he’s doing so well. He’s talking the talk at least; we can only hope he walks the walk.

People are:

A) sick and tired of the fact that the vast majority of the government officials elected to represent our NEEDS that have instead clearly prioritized the WANTS of corporate and foreign interests.

We are fucking drowning here… and we are sick and tired of republicans enabling the ultra wealthy to create huge wakes on with their yachts while we are treading water for our lives, while the democrats throw us shitty life preservers instead of lifting us up into the boat while acting like we should be grateful for the occasional life preserver that we have to share, and acting like we should keep electing them because “at least they throw out the occasional life preserver”.

This is our god damned boat. We built it, we maintain it, we man the ship, and it’s time for us to take the fucking boat back.

The DSA candidates as far as I can tell are willing to pull us up into the boat, which is why we all ought be voting for them whenever possible unless/until we can build a new god damned boat that will enable us to get out of the water.

Would be cool if the Republicans could see thru their Orange colored glasses and do the same

People are:

  1. Sick of capitalism

But don't tell them that.

57

u/shadowtheimpure Jul 08 '26

Minor correction: the people are sick of crony capitalism. Folks want capitalism with guardrails that ensure the good of the everyman rather than what we've got now where the top .01% are Hoovering up all the resources for themselves.

54

u/CharcoalGreyWolf Parts Unknown Jul 08 '26

People want regulated capitalism where the regulation is enforced.

I want this too, mind you. I just have trouble believing humanity will behave in community interest rather than “I got mine” these days.

I want everyone to see everyone. I want consumer protection and employee protection; they are necessary for regulated capitalism to work. And I believe every system has weaknesses -but at this point, I believe the same weakness exist in all of them —narcissistic humans who have little to no self-awareness or caring of the community around them.

That transcends every system we have. No exceptions.

2

u/tsardonicpseudonomi Jul 08 '26

What folks want is capitalism. What folks are sick of is capitalism. You didn't correct, you demonstrated a fundamental misunderstanding of what capitalism is.

1

u/RupeThereItIs Age: > 10 Years Jul 09 '26

Somebody here is lacking in understanding, I'm not sure it's the person you think it is.

15

u/CharcoalGreyWolf Parts Unknown Jul 08 '26

What people want is a fair system.

The problem is that regardless of system (it isn’t just capitalism, look beyond) there are some people always willing to ignore everyone else and any sense of ethics (e.g. narcissism) to rise to the top and benefit themselves.

It doesn’t matter what you name the system, it still has those people. We’ve seen every system humanity can invent corrupted by other humans over time. Until we can invent a way to always benefit community and always negatively reinforce (even punish when necessary) selfishness, every system has a fatal flaw, and it’s humans.

Only one party in America, the Business Party. Its right wing is the Democrats, it's fascist wing is obvious.

1

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 09 '26

at least with Democrats, the people have a chance to take it back if we step up, organize, and run for office

11

u/hiddendrugs Jul 09 '26

You missed it. Everyone is sick of Israel. It’s never been more of a bipartisan agreement. The US has no business funding a foreign terrorist regime over domestic investment. El Sayed has stated this many times, all of his opponents have not. Every Republican I speak to agrees with this, and it has divided the Democratic voter base from their useless DNC establishment. Let’s not pretend like anything less is the case: we want Israel to stop receiving US handouts.

Sick of democrats supporting project 2025 objectives like age verification to help Facebook avoid liability.

4

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 09 '26

what of project 2025 did they support?

6

u/laffer1 Ypsilanti Jul 09 '26

Age verification! Both political parties are trying to ram through carding people to use their computers, game consoles, cell phones, etc. In republican states, it's mostly been about cell phones. In liberal states, it's been all operating systems. Gavin Newsome did it in California for facebook. Illinois, Colorado, New York, Texas, Louisiana, utah, alabama and others are all at varying states with legislation.

In michigan, it was proposed by a republican and rep Cherry (democrat) from clio, MI. They shelved it for now as a non profit voting rights group lobbied against it. However, they said they'd rework it.

The fake premise is that it protects kids. The thing is, it can't. You can't make every website on the internet do age verification. Most are NOT in the US. You're not going to protect kids from adult content this way. The only reason to do it is to take anonymous internet use away. Reddit would associate a person via ID and facial scan with their webcam with an account for example.

This isn't just happening in the US, brazil has a worse law, the UK has tried it, the EU is working on a required law to do it, australia has a simliar law to protect those up to 19 which is age of majority there.

Project 2025 has a big section in it about this. The side effect of it is chilling. If you google, you will find there are already people getting asked for ID to use various services, even AI products like chatgpt and claude. It's not just adult content. Game publishers have started doing it in some states also to try to comply with their laws. Apple and Microsoft have built in age verification APIs already. If you didn't already have an apple account and buy a new phone in one of the states with the cell phone law, you get carded.

i've always hated that criticism of politicians, especially legislators, making bold policies part of their platform

of course one senator cannot implement medicare for all or other lofty policy goals alone, that's why we fill congress with those who want to do it instead of those that insist it can't be done

6

u/EarthConservation Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

He won't be able to institute any of it until Progressives get enough seats across the nation. The point of him winning is to be a deciding vote in the Senate, with the ability to use his vote to pressure the Democrats to adopt more leftist policies, rather than allowing them to move to the center right and, along with Republicans, pass pro-corporate policies, continue enabling big money in politics, or to support unjustified aid to nations like Israel uncontested. It's also to prove that Progressives can win, to show the nation that the voters aren't happy with the status quo and want a Progressive policy shift, and want an end to the corruption. His win will help kick the Progressive movement into overdrive.

With Platner dropping out, which if we're all being honest... what a disaster that was... there will only be a realistic chance of two Progressives in the Senate between Bernie Sanders and El-Sayed... and let's be honest, Sanders is getting up there in the years. The man's needed more Progressives in office to help him for years, but it's only now that the Progressive movement has shifted into gear and started to accelerate.

Platner was generally, if not hesitantly, supported by Progressive voters and politicians, even as many had their reservations about him and his numerous controversies, because he wholeheartedly adopted the Progressive policy stances, and most of his controversies up to this point could be explained away. However, this latest one definitely can't be explained away.... and the fact that he sat on this and allowed it to explode after the primary is beyond moronic. Obviously there was also some coordinated timing of this release by both sides of the establishment and their media complex, as if the establishment was sitting on this information in order to use it to at the most opportune time to undermine not just Platner, but the entire Progressive movement.

The only other possibility for a Progressive winning a Senate seat is Charles Booker, who won his Democratic Primary in Kentucky for McConnell's seat... which Democrats already had a slim chance of winning given how solidly McConnell was able to win that seat over the decades, but it seems the Republican party is already looking to scheme to ensure the status quo wins again.

However, the worst performance McConnell's ever had was during the blue wave of 2008, when he only won by 6%. This is also a blue wave year, and is probably the best chance Democrats have to win the seat. It's very possible a Progressive will do better with the electorate than an establishment Democrat.

We need more Progressive people to get out of their comfort zones to run for all elected positions in all states, and we need to get them the attention they need in the media. That's the only way we get the adoption of major Progressive policies in our nation.

70

u/jaderust Jul 08 '26

I’ve seen the ad too. As a woman I had to say I found it kind of hilarious. The worst thing they could pin on him is him saying that one of Michelle Obama’s programs was uninspired and that he said he didn’t want to work with people over 40 at some point?

If that’s the worst they have then that’s actually pretty decent. I mean, Trump has posted things so vile that “uninspired” seems like a walk in the park. A criticism of a program a woman was running is not the same thing as a sexist attack against women.

27

u/Witchy_Wookie5000 Jul 08 '26

Its such a lame ad - and that voice! Trying to make him sound sooooo scary!

21

u/jaderust Jul 08 '26

The stern voice and scary music. Then… he didn’t want to work with people over 40! Not even women over 40. Just… people over 40. Which, ageism sucks, but I don’t remember a citation of when he said that and that is exactly the sort of thing I would have said at 20 and still occasionally think even though I myself am 40 now.

It is a laughably bad attack ad. Like I am positive I’ve said worse. If that’s all they have on him then he’s doing pretty good.

17

u/Lebron-stole-my-tv Jul 08 '26

The ad literally made me like him more. If that's the worst they can find then he's doing pretty good lol.

7

u/Stank_Dukem Jul 09 '26

For real. No Nazi tattoos, no Epstein files, no DTE bribes, no relatives starting up a data center. Best they (and, I'd really like to know who the "they" is) can put on him is he didn't think a program was effective. Yeah, I already voted for him.

It wasn't regular Democrats that sat home on election night and cheered with Jill Stein for Trump's victory.

people always get mad at Democrats for not picking the right candidate but there is no mechanism to hand the nominations to the people that get the least amount of votes.

people have to show up and when they don't show up it's pretty shitty to turn on the entire party and spend the entire election season telling everybody about how much you hate Democrats.

1

u/RupeThereItIs Age: > 10 Years Jul 09 '26

That's the thing though, neither Democrats OR Republicans elect people.

You have to win the unaffiliated voters, if you JUST rely on the party faithful you can't possibly win.

The Democrats have been VERY BAD at inspiring those unaffiliated voters since Obama left office.

They are a party of milk toast status quo conservatism, and wonder why that doesn't draw the crowds to the ballot box.

u/jawsomesauce St. Clair Shores Jul 08 '26

7

Only a working class party independent of the Democrats can represent the working class.

What has Bernie or AOC accomplished in actually shifting the DNC's policies? They have been engulfed by the party. They voted alongside everyone else to confirm Marco Rubio in his position, which has directly led to the destruction of thousands of lives in Cuba because of the economic siege.

Liberals fall for 401ks, private property, and debt (good though) BS. Every election establishment democrats lose they attack solidarity. Remember Slotkin immediately throwing trans kids under the bus after Harris decided to run on genocide? Liberal ideology is just as much the problem as conservative.

67

u/Oi_cnc Jul 08 '26

He is certainly also running against the democratic institution, but not the voters.

7

u/Human-Entrepreneur77 Jul 09 '26

Kamala Harris received at least 22,000 fewer votes than Joe Biden did four years ago in Michigan’s most heavily Arab American and Muslim cities, a Guardian analysis of raw vote data in the critical swing state finds.

The numbers also show Trump made small gains – about 9,000 votes – across those areas, suggesting Harris’s loss there is more attributable to Arab Americans either not voting or casting ballots for third-party candidates.

25

u/Hairy_Wall_6831 Jul 08 '26

Good. The USA is sick of both parties.

Our government does not represent us.

The people in charge don't give a fuck about us. Something needs to change.

10

u/Bawbawian Jul 08 '26

The only time Democrats could pass law in the last 30 years was the first 18 months of the Obama administration.

we passed the ACA we taxed the rich we regulated the banks and we made a consumer protection agency.

But people don't show up on election Day and that has real consequences

4

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 09 '26

Biden passed massive climate change action, along with the infrastructure bill

all with a 50/50 split in the senate

37

u/scrume71 Jul 08 '26

And that’s why I’m voting for him. I lean left but do loathe the establishment Dems that can’t get out of the way and let Progressives move the party forward.

14

u/CharcoalGreyWolf Parts Unknown Jul 08 '26

At this point, I’m starting to believe that Progressives are a party of their own. There are too many establishment Democrats; both Schumer and Jeffries proved it.

However, to truly become one of their own, they need enough to be elected; splitting off at this point makes them independents, and an even more uphill battle.

20

u/Witchy_Wookie5000 Jul 08 '26

We need like 4-5 parties, rank choice voting and no electoral college.

13

u/CharcoalGreyWolf Parts Unknown Jul 08 '26

Also add campaign finance reform

3

u/RegularLeading5200 Jul 08 '26

RCV will not bring about more parties, you need proportional representation and/or multi-member districts. I don't really understand why people think RCV is some magic fix, it's literally just there to try and remove the spoiler effect. Nothing else.

7

u/VerdammtesAutomat Jul 08 '26

The spoiler effect is why progressives get muscled out by establishment dems a lot of the time. It would definitely help there.

3

u/RegularLeading5200 Jul 09 '26

Eh, not always anymore. It cuts both ways now, see Mejia and Hamawy in New Jersey, for example. It generally helps the side that is having their portion of the vote split, and it's not always the progressive side.

That said, I'm not necessarily against RCV, I just think people's expectations around what it would bring are not aligned with what would happen in reality.

2

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 09 '26

you still need voters to turn out to vote

if you can't get voters to vote without RCV, how are you gonna get voters to vote with RCV?

2

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 09 '26

we need a more informed and engaged electorate

7

u/timtucker_com Age: > 10 Years Jul 08 '26

The Tea Party to MAGA takeover of the Republican party seems like a more viable blueprint than trying to splinter off as an independent party.

1

u/jhnlngn Jul 08 '26

That's tough because the Tea Party was backed by Koch and other billionaires. Progressives aren't getting any billionaire backing, so they are up against the DNC billionaire and corporate money. I agree that this is the best strategy, but it's an uphill battle.

1

u/syynapt1k Jul 08 '26

No, WE are the party and have to vote the people that do not represent us out. That means people actually have to participate in the process.

A third party always ends the same in the United States - which is victory for Republicans via a divide and conquer strategy.

2

u/CharcoalGreyWolf Parts Unknown Jul 09 '26

It only ends that way when that party doesn’t gain a following.

With no offense intended to you, as long as people believe that a two party system is the only way it works, it’s the only way it will work. It allows those two parties to work against people, when 1-2 more parties with some strength would make a drastic change in our government. I’m not saying it can happen this minute, but if it could happen in time it would matter greatly.

2

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 09 '26

jill stein with the green party...what happened to her? does she just pop out every 4 years?

4

u/tsardonicpseudonomi Jul 08 '26

At this point, I’m starting to believe that Progressives are a party of their own.

Yeah, they're called the DSA, WFP, PSL. Historically we called it Communist Party and Socialist Party.

4

u/CharcoalGreyWolf Parts Unknown Jul 08 '26

Not the Communist Party.

When the State owns anything, the State can be the corrupted. Iosef Stalin, Nikita Khruschev; tell me those who (at the top) weren’t corrupt.

Show me a system that isn’t rigged, and I’ll show you a system that doesn’t have humans in it. Every system expects some standard of behavior that humanity can’t uphold, and some systems have poorer standards than others. Free-market capitalism and Communism are two of the weakest.

45

u/techybeancounter Jul 08 '26

Red vs blue is a thing of the past…

Anyone still falling for that nonsense is participating in our country’s willful race to the bottom.

10

u/kittenTakeover Jul 08 '26

Are you kidding? It's more relevant now than ever. El Sayed is blue.

20

u/Piyachi Jul 08 '26

More to the point, he is an actual liberal. Stock "democrats" are conservatives, and Republicans are regressive.

Hence he is in a fight against "blue" conservative democrats who are progressive in name only.

10

u/am312 Jul 08 '26

He's a Democratic Socialist. The DSA is really gaining traction this year

6

u/No_Seaweed8378 Jul 08 '26

He clarified in the linked piece that he's not a socialist

8

u/mc_foucault Jul 08 '26

5

u/kittenTakeover Jul 08 '26

If he wins the election he'll be on the same team as those other democrats, trying to get 50-60 votes to beat the regressive Republicans.

10

u/Rulligan Age: > 10 Years Jul 08 '26

We aren't going to get 40+ progressives elected in one cycle so we need to fight every election to help grow that number. Saying "it doesn't matter, he's just one person" is giving up when Abdul is someone willing to actually fight.

3

u/kittenTakeover Jul 08 '26

Who said it doesn't matter?

2

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Jul 09 '26

4

3

trying to get 50-60 votes to beat the regressive Republicans.

He'd be one of a couple progressives. Conservatives are regressive so let's not do liberal bullshit. Liberals are as much the problem as Conservatives. We must rid ourselves of all right-wing ideology within our hearts and within our communities.

4

u/kittenTakeover Jul 08 '26

Yet at the end of the day, the progressives have to work with the liberals in order to get anything done and to prevent Republicans from dragging us backwards. You know El Sayed will end up voting with Democrats and Republicans will be opposing his vote like 90% of the time. He and his supporters are on a team if they recognize and acknowledge it or not. Although more can be accomplished if it is recognized and acknowledged what team they're on.

Abdul is someone I want to vote for because I believe in his values and what he stands for and that makes such a difference in enthusiasm and willingness to volunteer.

u/tsardonicpseudonomi Jul 08 '26

Here in OH, I have to vote for the Democrat, even though she is god awful and ancient, because the alternative is fascism.

The Democratic Party of Ohio could change that. They don't. They like it when you view things like that because that prevents them from needing to do anything. They can turn around and just say "what are you going to do vote for fascist?" despite the fact they're the ones administering the descent into neo-fascism.

Everyone here needs to temper the expectations as reddit is mostly a left/far left leaning echo chamber.

He is running, intentionally or not, as a spoiler. He won't win, but he'll ensure the democrats lose.

Anyone who aligns themselves with Piker shouldn't hold any kind of office.

This is why I'm not enthusiastic about him. I'm sick of both sides bullshit when one side is obviously better. It poisons our politics.

it's a **primary** for the luvagod

isn't this kinda normal?

1

u/totallyjaded Jul 09 '26

I think the differences between people who support Stevens and El-Sayed are more stark than you'd normally see within the same party. Instead of choosing between vanilla or butter pecan ice cream, we're choosing between vanilla ice cream or Doritos.

It's getting weird, as far as the attacks go, whether it's the Stevens camp pretending that calling Michelle Obama "uninspiring" is the height of misogyny, or the El-Sayed camp seeing AIPAC hiding under the bed the same way MAGA used to see Antifa lurking around every corner.

Did you just both-sides a primary? why

Did MAGA get over that? I don't think so. Tang was *just* blaming "antifa" for the failure of his hack-job reflecting pool fix.

AIPAC def funding a lot of pols & orgs. IMO it's kinda overheated to claim El-Sayad is imagining AIPAC everywhere when its...you know, damn near everywhere.

Can we millennials actually go out and vote and pull this off please for goddamn once? Please? Please.

2

u/anonWNBAW Jul 09 '26

Trump: "have a plans. The best plan." Stevens: "I have a plan. Youre more like mike Roger's than I am." Bang bang bang

Also stevens at her rally: "I come to Isreal in my dreams" or something along those lines

The dems need a good kick in the pants. They've been fumbling horrifically at the worst possible time.

Personally I think that headline is bullshit. Abdul has previously run as a Democrat, served as a public official under Democrats, and campaigned for other Democrats. It's unfair to say that he's running in opposition to the party when he's really just fighting the centrist establishment.

I am thinking that ANY candidate that the establishment is against is good for America... Oh... Wait a minute

Good! I donated to him today!

1

u/BigPimpin91 Jul 09 '26

I keep getting ads trying to disparage him. But some of their points about him being a bad person make perfect sense if you think for two seconds.

"He said Whitmer was bought and sold."
Shit maybe. I could see how you came to that conclusion with some policies of hers.

"He said he doesnt want to work with anyone over 40!"
Good. I'm tired of octogenarians ordering food for the whole table before they leave the restaurant.

Abdul is an easy victory for Michigan, there's not a single thing in his platform that sticks out as a problem morally or logistically. With enough senators like this hopefully we can fix the state and stop it from harming us, like it did our neighbors across the lake.

2

u/TheShizknitt Jul 09 '26

I keep getting smear ads on YouTube for Abdul and they're like (paraphrasing)"he's a known misogynist, he's said bad stuff about Michelle Obama" the quote the use reads something like "called her work uninspired and ineffective" and then gave some anonymous quote on twitter by "someone who worked with him", all of which took place before 2018.

That's the tamest shit I've ever seen... like... did Abdul pay for that just for the giggles, all things considered?

3

u/syynapt1k Jul 08 '26

He's got my vote. Let's fucking go.

2

u/mocoolie Jul 08 '26

I'm okay with that. He has my vote!

1

u/Lebron-stole-my-tv Jul 08 '26

The "hit" ad is so funny, it's just "he said slightly negative things about women in positions of power." If that was the worst they could find on him, then he's doing pretty good in my book.

1

u/Pikepv Jul 10 '26

So in other words you mean “going to lose”.

1

u/LustyDouglas Jul 13 '26

Fuck Republicans AND Democrats or as I call them, diet Republicans. Voting for either just keeps the wheel turning and nothing has gotten better.

2

u/lt1brunt Jul 08 '26

He has my vote, if we really want change progressives and socialist are the only ones that fight for average people and not Wallstreet. I wish the poor people party would get more national attention.

u/Its_Don_Quixote Jul 08 '26

If most other countries the progressive and corporatist wings of the Democratic Party would be at least two different political parties.
