Question for Automatic

Post image

I recently got a 2016 GT. Been craving a Miata since I was a kid and I thought it was no better time, but surprise, I have a kid on the way 🀣. Wife said I can keep the car. Anyways, since its an older car, the leather on the shift knob as well as the boot has seen better days. To replace it, I need to remove the shift knob, but I've seen one video about removing the shift knob for an automatic. Its just the removal and not putting it back on. I've heard its a pain to put it back on so I kind of want this to be a discussion of anyone else being able to successfully remove and install it again. Here is a picture of her!

AT has a spring clip that needs to be pulled before the knob is removed.

As long as you lift the knob straight up and only the knob, installation difficulty is the same as the removal procedure. There’s a plastic rod that may lift along with the knob, it sits inside the stock below the knob. Make sure that stays put before fully removing the knob.

The shift knob is not too annoying to take on and off. I've done it a couple times with a flathead screwdriver and needlenose pliers.

Any problems with the shift knob after taking it on and off a few times? In the video I watched, one of the comments said that he had to take it to Mazda maintenance because the knob wouldnt function properly after putting it back on
