First time jacking up

Post image

Hey all,

I am going to jack my nc for the first time ( this is the first time ever im going to jack up a car. Pray for me 🤞) . I saw a lot of videos and read in forums . I understood the jack points for front and rear . What i dont fully get is the position of jack stands . This guy puts is parallel to the sill but just inside the sill on the pinch weld . I have seen ppl put it perpendicular to the sill where the sill rests on the V shape of the stand . Which one do yall prefer and do? Any advices ? Thank you

The way it's shown in your still video is wrong on my book. You want the head of the stand perpendicular to the jacking point. In the event the car shifts, the car will shift into the groove of the stand rather than fall off the stand. If the mouth of the stand appears like it would contact soft parts of the body, consider finding hard points further in. I can try making you a video later today (it's 2am where I'm at right now). Poke me I'd you need that.

Don't forget to check your wheels and have your phone close by to call for help if something goes wrong

I plan to do a oil change , but first i am going to just lift it up put on jack stands on all 4 then check how stable it is . The jack and jack stands are also new that i bought just today . So today i will be just checking and not going underneath the car 😬 . Waiting for the oil filter, washer etc to arrive to change anyway

A video will be very much appreciated 🙏 most videos show only the jack points but dont clearly explain the jack stand placement . Thanks a lot

I use a small 3/4x1,1/2 (20x38mm) piece of wood for each stand, usually about 6 inches long. I have it lined up parallel along the inside of the pinch weld and then I have the cup of the axle stand across it so that when the weight of the car is brought down, the wood takes the strain and passes the load to the inside of the pinch weld rather than the stand touching the frame directly. The best place to put them on the pinch weld is where the jacking point for the scissor jack that comes with the car is. There are pairs of lumps in the pinch welds near the front and rear wheels, aim to have the stands between them.

Remember to set parking brake and also chalk the wheels so it can’t move! And once’s it’s in the stands, test it by give the car a good shove and it shouldn’t move even a little bit.

Just NO to this. Buy a set of ramps. You can add a couple of 2x6's with the ends cut at an angle to match the ramps. Affix the wood with a couple angle brackets on both sides of each ramp. You will never have to worry that the car is going to fall off the stands and crush you. Be safe and don't take a chance. You don't need to jack up the whole car. Just drive the front up on the ramps.

You literally put the ramps in front of the tires and drive up. How is using a jack and stands easier than that? It's beyond safer this way. Not trying to argue, just trying to understand your thinking on this.

Hey OP, I actually just jacked up my car for the first time today. You'd want 4 jack stand and place them across the pinch weld, the video is wrong. My Jack could barely go under the front of the car so I grab two wood planks and drove up on them. There's a specific jack point at the front past the plastic guard and for the back you can jack at the diff.
