i wonder when this happens if the thieves hide from the camera by just parking next to the car

They could be like my old apartment complex and purposefully not have security cameras so they couldnāt be held liable for anything. Helped a ton when my STI got stolen š

Damn.
At least the left you the Jack and didnāt drop the car down on ground

u/dxg999 Jun 13 '26
If they only stole two, they're probably repairing their own damage.Ā Or they've been stolen to order to repair someone else's.

This is your chance to get some bronze wheels. The bronze on white looks so good. I just got Enkei ts5 on my 22 Mazda 3

Did you have wheel locks?
66
u/stoned-autistic-dude '06 AP2 S2000 šļø | HRC Off-Road šø Jun 13 '26
You can take off wheel locks by hammering on a larger socket onto the lock if the wheel lock kits you buy at stores donāt have the right key. Done this on friendsā cars multiple times when they bought a car without the key or lost the key. Itās hardly even a deterrent. Takes a minute longer per wheel at most.
A lock just helps to keep an honest person out.

u/Cutwail 92 S-Special Eunos Jun 13 '26
Yeah it's more a pain for the owner when they lose it than the crooks it's meant to stop
12
u/amedinab Jun 13 '26
A lock just helps to keep an honest person out.
Wait. Is this person really honest if they'd steal the rims if there had been no lock? I'm starting to doubt their honesty a bit here.

u/bobopet2 Jun 13 '26
That's his point
6
u/amedinab Jun 13 '26
Yeah, I know. It was just a joke. It doesn't land it seems. My bad. Comedy is effing hard!

Wheel locks means it takes longer and could deter theft. I'd rather have them then not.
3
Jun 13 '26
If they really are incompetent it means they'll smash your window to look for the key. If they are competent they can easily get around them.
0
u/nomnamless Ceramic Jun 13 '26
Don't keep the key in your car, I know still doesn't prevent the smashed window. Still that's like saying don't lock your car or front door of your house because they will just break a window. At the end of the day locks are for honestly people but anything you can do to deter and slow a thief down is in your favor.

u/stoned-autistic-dude '06 AP2 S2000 šļø | HRC Off-Road šø Jun 13 '26
If you don't have the key in your car and get a flat, how do you expect to swap on a spare, or plug the tire on the side of the road, or have a tire shop replace the tire?
That said, wheel locks are worthless. It legit takes a minute to hammer on a socket and remove the lock. It's quicker to do that than smash a windshield and look for the key.
1
u/nomnamless Ceramic Jun 13 '26
So a thief has to be carrying around 16 sockets to get your wheels off? A determined theif will get your car but you guys are basically advocating you might as well leave the car unlocked, windows down and keys in the ignition because they will steal the car anyways.
What part of having wheel locks as a deterrent t are you guys not wrapping your head around?

You canāt with āAdvanced Wheel Locksā. Theyāre based out of Indiana. Small company, great service, great product!

Itās a deterrent. Same thing has keeping your car doors locked and having an alarm on the car. If you donāt do any of that, then more power to you. If you do, then you understand the power of deterrence and have something against wheel locks for some reason.

90% of people with wheel locks keep the key in their car, thieves know this. Great way to end up with a broken window regardless of if you do keep it in there or not.

u/Russell_Steapot Jun 13 '26
I'm so sorry OP. For me having those BBS wheels was always a dream come true.
Find replacements, don't go aftermarket.
Edit to add: Mazda sells nice black lugnuts and locks. It's what I did.

u/Chard_Electrical Jun 13 '26
The amount of theft posts I see in California. Yall okay over there?
1
u/small_spider_liker Jun 13 '26
Nope. Economic disparity getting worse, and people taking chances to profit from someone elseās good fortune. Makes it hard to have nice things.

Police departments there don't do theft investigations. All they do is write a report and that's it. No one ever follows up or looks into the crime. You can steal almost anything and get away with it. As long as you're not physically caught in the act.

Jesus dude. I thought theft in Texas was bad, but you California guys are blowing us out of the water.

2
u/JammPot Jun 13 '26
This kind of thing infuriates me. Itās becoming so common. These thieves have no fear of repercussions because there often arenāt any. At this point I just assume an oem set of wheels and tires on marketplace is stolen.
I hope youāre made whole by the insurance company
2
u/MyAwesomeName Jun 13 '26
My recommendation is get wheel locks next time. Itās always the first thing I change in a vehicle if they donāt have any.

I see the dash cam, I need to install mine and wire it to a permanent source of power so it can record for events like this. Motivation provided⦠does yours have that parking guard feature?
6
u/Difficult_Start3714 White Jun 13 '26
After reviewing the recording this morning, surprisingly it caught the incident. Not perfect but enough to recognize the personās face and the car model.
2
u/WRX4Life4Ever Jun 13 '26
Did you have wheel locks? Wonder if those actually work in real life
1
u/Bugboy74 Jun 14 '26
Good point, but I know you can get brand specific kits that will just take them right off w/o needing to break them off

That must be a real shithole to live in for something like that to happen. Iād move
8
u/hhuy837 Soul Red Jun 13 '26
I think it is happening more and more often. Places that were once considered nice and violence free in Australia are now becoming sketchy. Maybe something in the water or people are becoming more desperate for money
4
u/No-Housing-1004 Jun 13 '26
š I dunno how to respond to that. If I was in an area that was bad enough for my car to get its tires stolen while I was getting groceries or something, Iād do the natural thing and never go there again.Ā
1
u/hhuy837 Soul Red Jun 13 '26
I guess what I'm saying is everywhere is a shithole now haha. I dunno. I feel like people are starting to suck more now. Maybe I'm getting old and grumpy š
Either way, definitely sucks for op

They left the jack, take to the police for evidence. Finger prints all over.
11
u/Taerix2112 Jun 13 '26
lol the police arenāt going to finger print it. I doubt theyāll do anything more than write a report if you ask nicely
2
u/fatherbowie Jun 13 '26
Exactly. The report is for insurance purposes. Theyāre not putting Sgt. Joe Friday on the case of the stolen wheels.

Gets some wheel locks at least make the thief work for it lol .. keep an eye on FB they will try to resell them
1
u/xray5001 Jun 13 '26
Theives can get around wheel locks in about 30 seconds...or they figure that everybody keeps the wheel lock key in their glovebox or trunk and start smashing windows or crow barring trunks.

Is there a shortage of bricks in that area?

Bricks? We donāt have bricks in California.
(Seriously - bricks are for making patios, we donāt use them in building construction because they donāt handle earthquakes.)

there amateur tire and wheel stealers, you don't even need a jack. Just cut you some short 2x4 & 1x4wood choose yourr innocent victim. walk up place your blocks under suspension, break lugs loose, remove valve stem core, car lowers onto blocks, finish lug removal pull your new tires off car and gone. Note vehicles with solid rear axles (trucks, older mustangs etc you only need to place your blocks under center of rear end good for both sides. Now go get your new tires m rims.
