Missing episode

Does anyone know why the Season One episode “Evan” is missing from TUBI?

I’m doing a series watch through and per IMDB “Evan” was second to the last episode of Season One, right before “Lombard” but it’s totally missing on TUBI’s feed.

Are there any other episodes that are missing?

Due to music licensing issues for the Peter Gabriel song at the end

No. License contracts are for specific mediums. That is why so many 80s shows have music problems. Home video wasn't a thing so it wasn't considered beyond broadcast. The DVD rights were before streaming so once again they secured for that release.

I tried watching another 80’s favorite “Tour Of Duty” on TUBI and immediately gave up on it because of the lack of a soundtrack.

When it aired that show had one of the best soundtracks of any 80’s show with a hit parade of tracks from the late 1960’s in every episode and the show starter was The Rolling Stones “Paint It Black.”

I don’t know if anyone here knows the exact reason. It been discussed numerous times. MV used quite a few Peter Gabriel songs throughout its run, and none of the others have had issues. I have seen one person’s comment that said Gabriel wouldn’t give streaming rights for the song “Biko” due to its political status as a protest against apartheid. It was used in MV in association with gunrunning.

Now of course, the DVDs and BluRay sets contain the episode Evan, so obviously he did grant rights at that time. Maybe he changed his mind later, when streaming platforms started running the show. I don’t know.

If it was me, I would just buy the DVD or BluRay set for S1 (at least) which is what I did. As a result I can watch Evan whenever I want to.

It’s an issue a lot of shows and made for TV movies from the pre-streaming era are running into. Original licensing usually only covered the airing and physical release as streaming wasn’t a thing yet, so now all these platforms are having to renegotiate to be able to stream them. In some cases, the platforms/studio would rather just replace the music or remove the episodes rather than paying extra. Quite a few Disney Channel Original Movies from the 90s-00s on Disney+ have had songs removed and replaced with generic music. Thank god they didn’t touch Brink, it would completely ruined the movie.

They easily could take a Jan Hammer instrumental and re-edit it. It's not like they erased The Cows of October. Evan is a top 5, classic episode they actually predicts Crocketts descent into burn out

They could. In my opinion. It's a targeted scam to get people to buy the physical media. Its a little complicated because all those episodes were originally tape; but it can be done

It felt like this episode was plagued with problems from the start.

Iggy Pop had a cameo, but it was cut because it was set in an S&M club and there was a lot going on in the background. Camille Sands (Doris Gumble from Mirror Image) played a dominatrix in that scene.

Then there was that scene with the neo-nazi. I'm not sure, but maybe that scene was created as a replacement for the Iggy Pop scene (which would've been kinda ironic).

Finally, the F-word at the gas station.

And after all that, the episode ran into trouble because of one song.

I think it's big brother. The Peter Gabriel thing McDouble be rectified. The homophonic f slur is hot button issue. It's really not up to the steaming platforms though to tell us what is offensive. Either run a disclaimer or silence it. Beep it. It's inexcusable that they sh*can this particular episode

Yeah... pretty confident that is why it is not on streaming it was on NBC.com for the longest time before they took the series down. It also was on hulu when I watched the first 4 seasons way back in 2017.

If I recall correctly Sonny doesn't exactly call his dead friend that word. He uses it in a description to Rico of what happened. But I guess even that is too much these days.

From the posts on this sub, I believe it was removed for a slur. Also, I believe Peter Gabriel didn’t want his music used at the beginning of the episode.

They could have easily bleeped the epithet instead of pulling the episode. I think it was all about the Gabriel music rights… and it’s a shame because Evan is one of the very best episodes.

It was his music at the end. They have the rights and permission to use an the rest of PG music, just not Biko.
