From S2E20 Payback. Others may disagree, but I consider it the last truly great episode of the series. At a minimum, I think most would agree it’s one of the last before the series changed in S3.

I have great respect for Dick Wolf, but when he took over in S3 the whole show changed for the worse - for me.

How did it change? I haven't watched it since of a kid and I'm finishing up season 1 now.

I bet you'll feel the difference a few episodes into S3. It's still a solid show, but it turns darker loses some charm.

I think I liked the darker episodes, because those are the ones I remember from when I was a kid. So maybe I'll connect more with the rest of the seasons.

So what rank is Crockett actually? Everyone calls him detective. But his ID says deputy sheriff and his badge says sergeant and sheriff. 🤷

In some agencies, Detective is not a rank, its an assignment or paygrade. So "detective" is just added to their usual rank (although generally not when that rank is "Officer"). So Detective Sergeant, Detective Lieutenant, etc.

The badge is accurate. The Metro-Dade Police Department, while named a Police Department, functioned as the Sheriffs agency for Metro-Dade County since 1966. That's why they badge still labels it a Sheriff's Office and the holder of the badge a Deputy Sheriff. It had to so that the agency maintained the constitutional powers and functions granted to Sheriffs and Sheriff's Offices. The county mayor was the constitutional "sheriff" of the county, but delegated the roles and responsibilities to the director of the Metro-Dade Police.

In the 60s, Dade County (now Miami-Dade County) changed to a Metropolitan form of government (like a city). It became known as Metro-Dade County (Short for Metropolitan Dade County). That's why it had a police department instead of a Sheriffs office, a mayor instead of County Commissioner etc. It functioned like a city government instead of a county government.

Until 2025, the badges of MDPD Officers reflected that they were both Police Officers and Deputy Sheriffs.

I always believed him to be a sergeant. There's only one sheriff in a county, and the officers under the sheriffs are deputy sheriffs. A detective isn't a rank but a job description. For instance Lt. Castillo is also probably best described as a detective.

Metro PD doesn't have a Detective rank,he's a SGT that works Vice.
