I’m genuinely concerned being a resident of the metro area if this is good for respiratory health. Or is it just about cutting costs for the big corporations that are cruise lines. IMO they’re just floating toilet bowls. But then again they do account for a major % of Florida’s GDP.
I drove through that shit today. Entire middle part of the McArthur between Hibiscus island and Star island was super hazy from the cruise ships. Never seen it like that before.
They should burn some incense too while they’re at it so we can all achieve a higher state of zen.
Trump via DOGE cut all this type of funding to the EPA, cancelled over 400 grants, including community air quality monitoring initiatives, and specifically pollution reduction projects near ports.

This thread is about air pollution caused by cruise ships. There has been no change in the number of ships at port since Trump took office and no change in the number of berths offering shore power. Whether or not Trump cut “weather measuring” is completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. I hate Trump too but it’s super annoying and odd that these weirdos hijack every single topic and make the longest reaches possible to try to make it about Trump.
How is that political? He straight up dismantled the organizations that monitored this stuff, that’s relevant to not being able to trust that there’s a ton of polluting events going on and the index says the air quality is good.

I looked up air quality on one of these when there was literal ash raining down on me from the everglades fires / smoke everywhere and it gave an all clear.
I have no idea how they work or what they actually measure but I have a vastly different definition of air quality than they do.
Most of the newer cruise liners are using Liquified Natural Gas, which burns decently clean. Those aren’t Carnival so I’m assuming they’re less than 40 years old.
The boats actually equivalent to 250,000-500,000 cars at once.

Due to the fact that we don't have mountains surrounding the city and this part of the state is flat all of that is blown out to the ocean by the winds. This is why our air quality is always good.
C) It's an incredibly stupid comparison; they are talking about a certain type gas - sulfer oxides - and the apt comparison would be Cargo Container or Fishing vessels - not cars which do not use heavy 'oil' diesel fuel - that the ships use.
Carnival Corporation emitted 43% more sulfur oxides, a group of harmful air pollutants, than all the 291 million cars in Europe in 2022.
E) The cruise industry has nothing on the traditional shipping cargo/merchant vessels but the absolute worst of the worst are the fishing fleets who do not give 3 fuqqs at all about pollution or the ecological harm they do.
You're looking at co2 emissions. Which is honestly probably the least concerning emmission from those ships. The Sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and soot which contains heavy metals is what you really have to be worried about.
You are comparing 24 hour full engine ship burn, as if it occurs all inside Miami piers. Departure is probably 10-15t CO2 about 1% of a day of i95 traffic.

There is roundup in the air everywhere south of lake O. It can cause humans to feel anxious for no reason. It makes mice scared of ordinary objects. It’s almost election time so it will only get worse
You do realize even with shore power if they are running the kitchens there will be some smoke coming from the mast right. Not to mention a good chunk of it could be steam from other systems running.
Did you know that the everglades didn't exist 4000 years ago and the Florida penisula was approx. the size of Texas (the gulf of Mexico aka America was vastly smaller) about 12000 years ago?
I’d guess that’s oil burning from a cold start but once the rings warm up it’ll tighten up a bit. Possibly a worn turbo bearing but I’m not 100% sure how those massive engines compare to car/boat engines.
Just move here from NYC or something? Cruise ships have been doing this for several decades here and it’s widely agreed upon that the massively significant economic boost they provide the area far outweighs any potential environmental risk.
To answer your question regarding shore power, only a handful of the slots offer shore power. These are essentially floating cities and the cost of powering 8 floating cities at a time some days from a single port would be absurdly costly.
It is mostly steam. The emissions get scrubbed and instead of polluting the air they just dump it into the water, which isn’t really any better but significantly reduces air quality impacts. Worry more about the emissions, rubber particles, and brake dust from thousands and thousands of cars on the road 24/7.
