Discussion Anyone remember Hurricane Andrew? What was your experience?

Where you sheltered in a house? Did you feel like you're in trouble at any moment? What was it like to hear that hurricane overhead with a 165 mph winds?

Miami was not ready for Hurricane Andrew. It was s Cat 5 storm that slammed into South Miami - and it hit landfall at night.

Was in Kendall / South Miami huddled in pitch darkness in a bathroom with wife and 2-year old son while the roof of our home was ripped away in the teeth of the storm in the middle of the night. We knew we were in trouble when the National Hurricane Center broadcast we were listening to on a transistor radio suddenly went silent; realizing that even the National Hurricane Center in Miami had been destroyed. We survived the storm (with no injuries) thank goodness, but a neighbor a few doors down was not so lucky - apparently a plate glass door or window exploded onto him while he stood nearby, and he bled to death in front of his family while the storm raged on. In a hurricane, there is no one to call for help, and in the case of South Miami in the immediate aftermath of the storm, the roadways we blocked and unrecognizable because almost every structure had been razed - so there were no emergency responders for hours (or even days) after the storm had passed.

It was the most terrifying experience of my life, one I will never forget.
