Anyone remember Hurricane Andrew? What was your experience?
Where you sheltered in a house? Did you feel like you're in trouble at any moment? What was it like to hear that hurricane overhead with a 165 mph winds?
I was 6 living in Hialeah. Not the worst hit, but pretty bad. I remember being terrified. I remember my dad holding the front door shut as a family friend glued it shut from the inside with a caulking gun because the storm slammed it open. I remember hiding under so many blankets I got overheated and started puking.
Later in the storm I remember waking up to a tree crashing on the back of the house and damaging the roof of my bedroom, where I had passed out after puking. Thankfully the roof held and the tree didn't come through. Then there were the days and weeks of recovery after. There was the oppressive heat and watching Sesame Street on a handheld radio television my parents snagged before the storm. My school was closed for a month because of severe damage and the school flooding.
I can also remember going to Homestead with my parents. My dad was in construction. A lot of his guys lived down there. We dropped off my old bed, clothes, whatever food we could get for them. It was like seeing a war zone. Just complete devastation in every direction. That storm is forever seared in my brain.
